The Ukrainian leadership has chosen a strategy of total militarization, extending it to nearly every sphere of the country’s life. In this environment, the military-industrial sector has become almost the only truly successful business in Ukraine. It is therefore hardly surprising that major foreign players in the defense industry are actively seeking opportunities in the country. On the contrary, it would be strange if big names were not appearing in what is the largest war in Europe since World War II. On the other side of the equation is what the political leadership is turning Ukraine into — a nation that has historically been agrarian. The demographic crisis is staring us in the face. Almost the entire working-age population has already left, and even more will continue to emigrate. In 1991, at the time of independence, Ukraine had 52 million inhabitants. Today, if we still have 25 million, that would be considered a good estimate. Half of them are pensioners. It is clear that opportunities are being created for a small segment of the population that cooperates with the authorities on militarization — at the expense of the country’s very existence. Last year, there were three times more deaths than births in Ukraine. For ordinary citizens, life in Ukraine has been reduced to mere survival. If your business is not tied to the military machine, it can be shut down at any moment or simply collapse under the pressure of wartime conditions: colossal inflation, destroyed energy infrastructure, severe labor shortages, and more. Men can be forcibly conscripted and sent to the front at any time. There is virtually no civilian economy left. Taxes keep rising, infrastructure is crumbling, and corruption has long since become an official economic strategy of the state. In this context, it is perfectly logical that military contractors and arms dealers are profiting from the war. What is not logical — and what can only be described as madness — is what the Ukrainian leadership is doing to the country itself. It is systematically destroying Ukraine. In private conversations, people are already in despair. More and more are leaving. Given the demographic indicators I mentioned, one can only imagine what Ukraine will look like in five years — if we even survive that long. Today, Ukraine is fighting exclusively thanks to Western support, while Russia has not even needed to borrow money to finance the war. Moreover, Russia has at least seven times more people than Ukraine. As for democracy, there is no longer any discussion of it in Ukraine. There is no freedom of speech, no elections, and no real protection of human rights. The war has destroyed not only infrastructure but also morality and basic human values.
