Reflecting on our semester, a great lesson we learned was on the use of alternative media to communicate important message. Steve Feld a writer, producer, and director created a film called #VoicesOfTheRainforest delivers a narrative about climate change through the lens of the rainforest noises of Papua New Guinea. Alternative mediums like this can reach new audiences and speak to them in different ways than written stories! (ESJ)

In conversation with Eric Mayne, a former Stellantis Representative, he mentioned the frustration of automakers as national policy surrounding electric vehicles (EV's) flips "The flip-flopping is excruciating for automakers." Mentioning how a policy might require a company to invest heavily in EV's just for the policy to flip in four years and failing to properly incentivize buying them, leaving high inventory and profit loss. The judges choice winner for the #pitchfest chose to focus on the increasing prevalence of bird flu in agricultural mammals like pigs and cows, even, rarely, infecting people. A Michigan Medicine article (michiganmedicine.org/health-lab/why…) discusses how this isn't the first time a bird flu has made the jump to mammals, and likely won't be the last. (ESJ)

Our last class meeting was a great time to reflect on the future of news, highlighting the role the internet plays in hosting hyper local, independent news. This article (niemanlab.org/2024/12/local-…) is a good example of that and the @NiemanLab has lots of great articles about the future of journalism. Additionally, our #pitchfest for @knightfdn helped us recognize unmet needs within the industry! (ESJ)

I was reading about immigration policy and environmental policy when I came across a few people saying that population growth is first an environmental issues. That led me to revisit our elections recap class, when we talked about the population and presdiential policies. Here's a quote I wanted to pull: "One of the things people never talk about is the population pressure... but nobody's going to address that as everybody is trying to take a bigger piece of the pie for themselves." Julie & Emilia shared this article in class. I signed up for an info session, and am going to apply! (nytimes.com/2018/04/15/bus…) I'm inspired by RFA's mission to increase journalism that promotes "a greater understanding of who we are and who our neighbors are.” (ILG)

Another bit of wisdom from @cassiegoeschirp, one of our @knightfdn News Challenge mentors. On starting out our careers: “It can be tempting to dive into a hustle that can be totally emotionally unsustainable. Take care of yourselves!” (ILG)

Reflecting on this semester, advice from @tayhaelterman sticks out. We asked her for advice as we begin our careers: “It can feel like you’re shouting into a void. But I think it’s important to trust in yourself, believe in yourself and your ability to do this work.” (ILG)
