Petra, in Jordan, is one of the most famous places in the world. But what is it? How old is it? And who built it? The story begins with an ancient civilisation you've probably never heard of...

Fast forward to today, 2.5 years, we are ready to share some results we obtained from our operational demo-scale plant, and tell the story of us purifying wastewater - the unconventional way. (2/2)

This is possibly the first and last article for KAUST Insight. When Sara asked me for an Insight story for the then soon-to-commence KAUST Insight, I told her I might have a gruelling story to share but that the time is not ripe yet. (1/2) kaust.edu.sa/en/news/sustai…

Recently, when searching on Google Flights, I noticed that when I sorted by "less emissions," I kept getting a Boeing 737-Max 9. I wondered: Why is that? And does this mean lower-emissions planes are less safe? I sent a reporter to get answers. Here's what she found (1/X) 🧵

Egyptian pyramids are not where they're supposed to be. Why? Why is Cairo, the biggest African city, where it is today? Alexandria? Why do over 100M Egyptians live so densely clustered? These questions all have the same answer. Look:

First author Hong Cheng utilized all of the data to derive the predictive model, together with assistance from Rui and Liuwei. A very fruitful collab indeed!!

Then COVID-19 struck and we had to delay the work. After Eduardo left, Jianqiang and Julie helped with the remaining flow cytometry work and to address reviewers' comments.

Started this work slightly before COVID-19, visiting student Eduardo looked into the use of flow cytometry to determine the high and low nucleic acid content cells, with the help from Xelu's group.

The first photo is me 3 years ago today. At absolute rock bottom. The message though is for anybody who has a hard time. I’d just tried to drink myself to death and take so many valiums that I hoped I wouldn’t wake up. I was 41 and would often cry myself to sleep and have huge bouts of depression and anxiety. Luckily I shocked myself enough that I’ve been sober ever since and the rest of the photos are from this year and some of the lovely dogs we’ve helped along the way. I don’t have the magic answer to solve your problems. I still have to do breathing to control my own anxiety and I get the odd bout of depression and I’m bad at social situations and an introvert in the real world but I’m happy with the dogs. What I do want to say is that I couldn’t see a way out. I didn’t see how I could ever be happy. I would have been so happy if I’d gone to sleep and never woken up back then. And that feeling was there for 25 years on and off. Just like myself and the dogs in the photos I hope maybe this can show you that things do change. Comebacks are possible. The storm clouds do pass. The fresh start you crave is out there and you can have it. It might not happen immediately or how you plan it but please trust me when I say things can change. 3 years ago I lay in that ICU half dead listening to fireworks outside at absolute rock bottom in my life. Now I get to spend my days doing what I always would have loved helping dogs. It’s something I’ll never take for granted even for a second. If you are struggling you are not alone and I know you can have a better life too. I miss Tina, Snoop and Derek terribly but I’m so glad I hung around to be with them and all the other dogs who need help 🥰🙏
