Today's Ramsar Spotlight takes us to Loktak Lake in Manipur. Revered as Loktak Ima (Mother Loktak), the lake holds a sacred place in the hearts of the Meitei people. According to legend, the Supreme Goddess Ima Leimarel transformed herself into the lake to become part of creation. Over centuries, Loktak has inspired folklore, rituals and the celebrated love story of Khamba and Thoibi, making it a living symbol of Manipuri culture. #WetlandsofIndia

A day-long workshop on Human–Wildlife Conflict was held under the aegis of the Centre of Excellence on Human–Wildlife Conflict (CoE-HWC), which was inaugurated earlier in the day by the Hon'ble Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Bringing together Chief Wildlife Wardens and experts, the workshop focused on the human–big cat and human–elephant interface, showcased state-level best practices, and reaffirmed that community participation is the foundation for sustainable human–wildlife coexistence. #HumanWildlifeConflict #Conservation #Coexistence

Inaugurated the Centre of Excellence on Human–Wildlife Conflict at WII-SACON in Coimbatore. Announced by PM Shri @narendramodi ji during the 7th Meeting of the National Board for Wildlife, the newly established Centre of Excellence will serve as a national hub for research, innovation, policy support, capacity building, and the dissemination of best practices to strengthen the scientific and evidence-based management of human–wildlife conflict. Urged the institute to develop a comprehensive strategy for framing policies to effectively manage conflicts involving tigers outside tiger reserves, as well as leopards and elephants, and their interactions with people. Awareness generation must be undertaken in mission mode across both urban and rural areas to educate communities on safely dealing with human–wildlife encounters. Reviewed the progress of Project Sloth Bear during the 91st meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) today at CASFoS, Coimbatore. In addition, conservation issues concerning grassland species, particularly those found in the Brahmaputra and Duar–Terai landscapes, including the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and the Pygmy Hog, were discussed at length. A dedicated project for rhino conservation will be launched soon with the assistance of National CAMPA in the species’ range states. Reviewed the progress of Project Great Indian Bustard (GIB) in the 91st meeting of Standing Committee of National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) today at CASFoS, Coimbatore. It is heartening to know that second ‘jump start’ attempt executed in Naliya, Gujarat has succeeded and the chick born on 21st of May 2026 has passed the critical stage of ~40 days of survival. Besides this, the total number of chicks born in captivity in Rajasthan at Sam and Ramdevra have reached to 98. The project will soon be entering into rewilding phase for which efforts are on. The team of @wii_india and State forest departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat are leaving no stone unturned to make the project successful.

Visited Kozhikamudi Elephant Camp in Annamalai Tiger & Elephant Reserve which has about a century-old tradition of upkeep of elephants in captivity. Also interacted with the mahauts and cavadies of Malasar community, who have been carrying forward their centuries old tradition of handling camp elephants and living with them inside forests of Annamalai hills. The facility created by Tamil Nadu Forest Department at Kozhikamudhi elephant camp both for elephants and their handlers is worth seeing.
