I think asking people what part of the franchise they like before trying to strike up convo (mainly irl) is perfectly fine and allows you to avoid confusing the other person with info on a part of the series they haven't experienced

many miss that gen 2 is a direct sequel to gen 1 and that's why the games still heavily feature kanto and have some johto pokemon as rare/postgame encounters. it doesn't use the same formula for a new generation that newer games do. and that's ok.

@EonReporter its cause they aren't gen 1 fans, they saw that one game they played 30 years ago is now worth money so they hop on and just say "yeah I liked the first games only" while still knowing absolutely nothing about those games beyond pikachu and charizard and maybe 1 other Pokemon.

Well, first off, I've already answered that question 🤷
Second, the theme of the game is literally "Gotta catch 'em all". I'm not saying it's the case, but wouldn't it make MORE sense to have the dex memorized instead of meaningless NPCs?
And lastly, again, what if I could answer your question but then I got a concussion and suddenly couldn't answer it? Do I just go from a fan to a non-fans? That's the gap here.

Such a ridiculous take. Professor Oak, Bill, Mr. Fuji, and Bruno (you said GYM leaders). And the Rocket Bros are the group in Silph Co. This is just to prove by your standards that I've played Gen 1 and am a fan.
I absolutely hate the ridiculous take that if you don't have every NPC in a game memorized then you can't be a fan. What if I had them memorized then had a condition that hindered my memory, like Alzheimer's or a concussion? Am I suddenly not a fan anymore? According to your logic, apparently not. Maybe I'm just not good with names, maybe I don't really pay attention to NPC names in video games, or maybe I'd rather focus on remembering Pokemon.
By this logic, you could know the Pokemon on every trainer's team, understand the quickest routes for a speed run, and play competitively and still not be a fan if you don't remember NPC names.

If you're not that literal then why didn't you leave any room for interpretation? You literally said "If you can't name 4 NPCs that aren't gym leaders and you can't name the group of 4 rocket grunts in Silph Co then you can't dare call yourself a Gen 1 fan"
And if you think it's the game that's annoying me, then I'll just stop you right there. It's fans who think you need to know 100% about everything in the game to be a fan. If that's not what you believe, then that's good, but that's the belief you're pushing with that post.
