NRG is leaving Apex Legends.

The takes on the timeline are a bit too chaotic, blame focused, and impractical for me. Esports is currently marketing and a spend from the company POV. It’s transitioning into a revenue generator, but not fast enough for orgs to make money and the Company to turn a profit. Skins haven’t been a solve yet, so orgs are cutting costs and if they have big names, big budgets monthly for a team, then they probably won’t be able to keep them. It’s just the state of affairs until a solution is reached. Orgs need to be self sustaining regardless of in game revenue and this restructuring is a result of that. I hope it adjusts soon but I’ve seen it across all esports and games this year and though I’m saddened to see NRG leave, I understand the decision. Most of the money in major sports gets a baseline from a TV Rights deal that is usually in the hundreds of millions. Jerseys and ticket sales add to that and the collection of revenue options becomes highly profitable. The teams make money on their own AND through league participation. That isn’t the case when we have no broadcast rights and we’re mostly (except a few) just airing it for free. It also is true that most orgs aren’t good at profiting off of their own content from players (ie, a YouTube channel pulling in 20K a month from ad rev) except for sponsorship deals - which have plummeted this year specifically by probably 1-2x from the last 3 years. This is all the great transition esports is going through to find stability for the future. We WILL get there, but moments like this will happen along the way to adjust for the long haul.
