the tweet is vague. the actual science is far more unsettling. JWST isn't finding one thing wrong with our understanding of the universe. it's finding several things wrong simultaneously. here's what it's actually seeing: massive galaxies fully formed just 600 million years after the Big Bang. our models say that's impossible — galaxies need billions of years to build up that much mass. JWST found dozens of them. black holes a billion times the mass of our sun, already fully grown, when the universe was less than 5% of its current age. nobody knows how they got that big that fast. the universe is expanding faster than it should be. measurements from the early universe and measurements from today give different answers. this is called the Hubble Tension — and JWST just made it worse. what this means: the Standard Model of cosmology — the rulebook we've used for 30 years — has too many exceptions now to be fully correct. we're not missing one piece of the puzzle. we may be working off the wrong picture entirely.
