This week Equity's Kirsten Muat sat before the Women and Equalities Committee @ukcommonscommittees and said what many of our members already know: precarious, low-paid work stops women from speaking out about bad behaviour. The committee will soon be asking for submissions to their inquiry on Experiences of Women in Live Comedy, watch this space to find out how to take part.

.@EquityUK urges members to take care when reviewing contracts - and usage terms - for similar projects. A powerful example of collective action delivering results. When members stand together, supported by their union, better standards can be won. ✊🏻 equity.org.uk/advice-and-sup…

Fantastic news in the UK today - the government has apparently ditched its plan to force creatives to 'opt out' if they don't want AI companies training on their life's work. The opt-out proposal was unfair and unworkable. Many couldn't realistically have opted out at all, and it would have affected small rights holders disproportionately negatively. We should be grateful to the government for listening to reason on this, rather than just listening to the big tech lobby. They have done the right thing by putting opt-out behind us. They should now reaffirm what the law says - that AI companies must license people's work if they want to train on it - and commit not to change that law. thetimes.com/uk/technology-…

Equity Audio is aware of Games Studios trying to engage performers without a standard AI clause in their contract, instead asking performers to rely on a ‘letter of intent’ that their work will not be replicated using generative AI. Our statement:

Infuriating. And not in the least bit surprising.
Ed Newton-Rex@ednewtonrex

This clip makes it abundantly clear the @UKLabour government is planning to introduce a copyright exception for commercial research (read: AI training) - which would be disastrous for British creatives. When asked the simple question of whether AI companies will be required to license copyrighted work they want to train on in the UK (as they are required to do at the moment!), this government minister says: "Our priority is to ensure that the UK is ready for AI-related risks while supporting responsible innovation and long-term growth." If you are planning on maintaining robust copyright laws that protect creators, this is not the answer you give. This is the answer you give if you're preparing to try to justify upending the law and throwing creatives under the bus. Creatives in the UK gearing up for a big fight, I think.
