It was difficult to understand why a political lecture was necessary at the book launch of Dr Sushil Razdan. The occasion was meant to celebrate his life, his service, and his contributions as a doctor. Speakers including @IltijaMufti_ Mufti, @MirwaizKashmir, the Deputy Commissioner, Atul Duloo and others kept their remarks dignified and focused on the purpose of the event. However, Farooq Abdullah chose to take the discussion in a completely different direction by introducing political commentary that was neither required nor appropriate for such a gathering. More concerning was the remark regarding “Nara-e-Takbeer.” This is not just a slogan it carries deep religious and emotional significance for people. Reducing or comparing it in a dismissive manner, especially out of context, was unfortunate. If one truly understands its meaning, such statements would not be made casually. What adds to the contradiction is that the same slogan is often heard in political rallies and conventions. If it is to be questioned in one setting, then consistency demands it should not be used elsewhere for political convenience. People expect seriousness, consistency and respect for sentiments. Political points should not be scored at the cost of meaningful occasions or deeply held beliefs. At the end of the day, public trust is built not through statements, but through sincerity and keeping promises. Had there been consistency over the years, much of the criticism would not exist today. One is left wondering what was the need to bring this up in the first place? Especially at an event that had nothing to do with political rivalry. It only diverted attention from a moment that deserved respect and unity.
