The skies sprinkled on our boat as we returned from a dolphin survey along the #Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. In the distance, large dark shapes moved in peculiar ways. As we got closer, the shapes resolved into massive ancient creatures, one on top of the other.

The James Webb Space Telescope has started capturing images of galaxies so far away that they are causally disconnected from the Earth — nothing done here or there could ever interact. 🧵 1/

From the drone, we could see little small black specks pursuing bottom feeding dolphins. When we reviewed the videos, we saw dolphins sometimes biting at the birds causing them to take flight and try again.

On a hot July day during my PhD data collection, we followed #dolphins as they moved from seagrass patch to seagrass patch. On this day though, we noticed something odd. A cormorant moving along with us as it followed the dolphin group.

My first day at @MoteMarineLab was lovely, peppered with the critters that are now my neighbors. The fish greeted me warmly and the ibises said hello hello. Now it’s time to finish moving to Florida for some more sciencing and a whole new life!

1/9) Very excited to share that we have a new OA paper on rhythm in cetacean vocalizations in @PNASNews! This was one of my favorite PhD thesis chapters. It continued to grow at @MPI_NL with @AndreaRavignani, and I'm happy it's finally out in the world. doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

I'm SUPER excited to announce I'll be joining the team @MoteMarineLab as the Manatee Postdoctoral Fellow in June! I'm not thrilled to leave Sarteneja and Belize, my simple barefoot seaside life (see image for reference), but opportunity calls!

Excited to share our newest publication on manatee feeding in Belize! Read about it the thread by study coauthor @N_CastelblancoM researchgate.net/publication/37…

Manatees eat upon a large variety of plants🌿🌱🍀, but we are still discovering new species of their diet. In our 🔥 new note led by @EricAngelRamos, in collab with @doc_tellez @lmaycollado and myself, we documented manatees feeding on floating seagrass Halophila baillonii.⤵️

We found manatees used this area persistently through the winter months for decades, suggesting its an important place for at least some of the local Florida manatee population. Findings will help support improved management and protection of the area and its #manatee residents.

Identifying critical habitats for manatees and understanding their importance to them can be tricky. Luckily, at Fort Pierce in Florida, the Manatee Center and its volunteers have been monitoring the occurrence of #Florida manatees for more than 20 years!

Our new paper is out today in @Nature , showing that bumblebees possess the cognitive capacity for some of the key ingredients of cumulative culture, previously though to be unique to humans nature.com/articles/s4158…

This might be an odd question, but: can anyone provide us with high-res images of goat faces for our new study? (we want to avoid familiarity issues, so we opt to not include images of goats from our herd) cc @Goatslovepasta
