@benedictevans TV and newspapers couldn't monitor you as you interacted with them, nor could they use AI to learn the things that you specifically pay more attention to.

"Meaningful Technologies" focuses on the feedback loop between digital metaphors and technology: its meaning, how it changes over time, and how it impacts learning and attention. It's now available and completely free to read, here: doi.org/10.3998/mpub.1… #OpenAccess

It's important to remember that algorithms are created by PEOPLE. The impact of algorithms reflects the decisions made by those PEOPLE. There is nothing natural about this. It's something Facebook is actively choosing to do.

Facebook has created an alternative universe (a metaverse, if you will) where right-wing propaganda from Breitbart is more popular than the New York Times and right-wing propaganda from the Daily Wire is 3x more popular than the New York Times.

@scottmccloud Once upon a time I wrote a chapter for a book on the relationship of spatial processing and linguistics on that very topic.

@jkottke I had the exact same reaction, except I stopped after 2. I did watch the last 15 minutes of the finale though, just to see who was in the box.

Even after 2.5 episodes, I could not get into The White Lotus – was bored, irritated, reminded unfavorably of Twitter. What am I missing?

@DamonRutherford @JPosnanski To get genius you need to get about 2/3s of the possible points. So if you look at the points for genius you can get a good estimate. Today the total should be around 150 points.

@JPosnanski Is there a way to see how many words you still need to find? I feel like I'm close to finding them all!

@josephinewrites Putting things in your contacts should work. Some people do it so their swear words aren’t autocorrected.

To the spell-check gods: can we please find a way to not *constantly* autocorrect every non-Anglo name I type in my emails? I hate that Mai gets corrected to Mia, Saya to Says, etc... maybe there's an option I can choose in my Gmail settings? Like don't correct capitalized words?

@zeynep Some colleagues and I in Digital and Computational Studies at Bowdoin have a paper coming out soon that is closely related to this concept. Since everything we do involves interdisciplinary work we are developing a framework on how to do it.

On the serious side, a bunch of what I've done is genuinely lane-crossing, and I've mostly done it in order to facilitate the interdisciplinary, synthetic analyses we do need. There's a genuine question there on how to do this well in general, and the dangers (which are real).

The cat is out of the bag, folks! I knew this day would come, when I'd be outed.😁 And in a piece where I talk about sociological aspects of mask mandates, too. Cruel irony after more than a year of pandemic writing. (FWIW, Dr. for PhDs is NYT convention, not about me).
Ross Garber@rossgarber

Today the ⁦@nytimes⁩ published a piece on a medical issue by someone named Zeynep Tufekci. The NYT refers to her as “Dr. Tufekci” and describes her as a professor. A reader might reasonably infer she is a physician and a professor of medicine. She is a sociologist.
