Uh, don't mean to be cruel about it but "losers"? Harris only got so close to winning because Trump was so terrible. She, herself, is an extremely weak candidate, not very courageous and not very forthcoming. Cortez is brainwashed by her singular beliefs. Neither one represents the broader base of American belief or common sense.

@historyinmemes Shame. Then we committed genocide on that island. The good news is that people like Carnegie are a part of our national fabric. The good people do not always win the argument, but they have their say, and this nation still, sometimes, makes very good choices.

In 1898, Andrew Carnegie was so opposed to the United States annexing the Philippines that he offered to personally repay the $20 million the U.S. paid Spain for the islands — roughly $800 million today — if it meant the Philippines would be granted independence. Carnegie joined figures such as Mark Twain, William James, and former president Grover Cleveland in opposing annexation through the American Anti-Imperialist League. He argued that ruling another nation through force would transform the United States from a republic into a colonial empire. His offer was rejected, and the Senate approved the treaty by a single vote on February 6, 1899 — just two days after fighting broke out between American and Filipino forces. The United States then established colonial rule over the Philippines. An elected Philippine Assembly was created in 1907, the Jones Act of 1916 promised eventual independence, and the Philippine Commonwealth was established in 1935. After the Japanese occupation during World War II, the United States finally recognized Philippine independence on July 4, 1946 — nearly 50 years after Carnegie’s proposal was turned down.

@aviationbrk C'mon! It's India! When I lived there, I got food poisoning nearly every week. Sanitation does not seem to be taken seriously there.

Breaking Aviation News & Videos
British Airways has launched an investigation after all three pilots operating flight BA276 from Hyderabad, India, to London Heathrow, England, reportedly suffered food poisoning following an overnight stopover. The first pilot was rendered ‘incapacitated’ at 30,000 ft and had to be put on oxygen and needed serious medical care upon landing. The other two pilots managed to work, but their symptoms continued to worsen. The pilots had shared breakfast in a hotel lounge in Hyderabad, but drank bottled water from an external company. British Airways said in a statement, "The welfare of our colleagues is a top priority, and we are reviewing crew accommodation in this location following some isolated reports of sickness." They all filed Air Safety Reports and were asked to provide samples so doctors could try to pinpoint the source, with British Airways now reviewing their hotel options.

Interesting reading. But, then again, I love the fact that these guys express confusion about the situation. The fact is, every Black person is on a power trip when they use that term. Either they are using it to prove they're cool, to insult other Blacks, or to lord it over Whites that they can use the term and White people cannot. This use is so reflexive, Black people are only partly conscious of the game they're playing, and that's partly why these men's responses are confused. They don't understand their own investments in the power of language. Comedians can suck the power out of the term, but most of them, too, use it in the above ways. So, when you approach it academically, you step outside of all those categories and you take all the taboo power out of the word, robbing Black people of their game. I don't think that's what Karl was up to. He was a White basketball coach who was uniquely aligned with Black culture. The book was a bestseller. He was just doing his job of understanding the people that he worked with. I say, bravo to him.

JR Smith reveals George Karl kept a book titled "N**GAS" on display in his Nuggets office JR: "This man had a book in his office called Ni*ga" Melo: "I know the book. That's a big time book." Melo: "It was just there. Regardless like you're a coach. You're a basketball coach. Predominately your team is black. Like all your teams and successful teams was at the head of those teams was black men." Melo: "You walk into the office of a particular person, a white man, right? Young, 20, 21, 22 I knew my history a little bit. I never was in my neighborhood it wasn't that. It was black and white but I ain't no fool. That book don't sit right in this room right here."

@qz So, the implication of the sexist sub-headline is . . . ? All men are anti-abortion? All men should not help women get abortions by supporting a company that does? All women want abortions, but men do not? None of these things are true, of course. Watch your sexism, Quartz.

@simonschuster Hi Simon and Schuster, I'm a yoga historian and am attempting to discover more information about one of your authors, Alice Christensen (a Cleveland practitioner who published 14 books on yoga). Any help you (or anyone!) could give, would be helpful.
