#Reopening of the #Geomuseum #Münster after 16yrs of renovation. I was working there as student assistant when it closed in 2007. The 🦣 now looks towards the cathedral. A huge #erratic #boulder was placed in front. Everything is stylish & new.The #museum is worth a (free) visit!

#MaunaLoa on #Hawaii is erupting for the 1st time since 1984. 🌋 Hiking to the summit was the most surreal trek I ever did. And seeing no one else in two days, seemingly having this massive volcano to myself (+ a horrible headache over night at the crater due to the altitude 🤪)

@ActiveFaults to me, the coloring appears to reflect Fe concentrations of initial deposited layers: in bottom left of second image, there seems to be horizontal bedding, which then becomes disturbed towards the right!?

@EricS_Geo Liesegang rings? A question of porosity and circulation of fluid (Fe-rich) - my guess.

A friend sent me these photos from #Petra #Jordan. Does anyone know anything about this? I.e. how the structure (and color variations) in the red layers formed? I'm curious, but not finding literature on it. 🧐 #GeoTwitter

@tariq_aziz44 Sweet! I didn't make it up to Khyber unfortunately (or anything north of Passu). Drove into Shimshal and from there returned south.

In the #Karakoram, #Pakistan, there's a hiking trail trench through a glacial lateral moraine. Fairly crazy by itself. 🫣🪨 And then you see beautiful sets of deformation bands there. 🥰

@Stef_EQ_Geology My guess is that these bands formed due to instability sliding/slumping of the moraine after glacial retreat. I've seen a number of moraine-parallel cracks in the glacier-facing moraine flank.

@geolsubho Yes, a hard hat is advisable (not really helpful for the big boulders though 🤪). Yet also: if one worries too much about falling rocks, one wouldn't set foot into the Karakoram in the first place. And miss out on a stunning landscape. 🤷‍♂️🙂

@EricS_Geo I don’t recommend someone walking along this trial without wearing a hard hat as you clearly see many boulders are ready to fall off!! Eta

Despite all good advice, sometimes staying the night at the work place feels like the right thing to do. 🙂

Finally, after 2-year covid-postponement, I was able to go for field work in NW Namibia again. 🥳 Was great to be back. Geology and scenery as fantastic as ever. But temps >40°C just brutal. 😅 Now waiting for my sample shipment. 🤗

and after the flooding event, the water quickly dries up in the dunes within a few days (image from Feb. 21st, 2022)

The NW of Namibia was extremely dry the last years, but is now seeing exceptional rainfalls. Water in rivers is reaching the sea for first time since 11 years. Sentinel imagery is spectacular (here the Hoanib floodplain). 1 month ahead of planned field work in the area. #sentinel

Reviewing work I reviewed before for another journal (editor knows). Authors improved little of the concerns of all reviewers. Seems it's just submitted elsewhere hoping others to miss the issues. I find this extremely disrespectful towards the peers who spend their time with it.
