“Russian occupation means torture, rape, enforced disappearances, denial of your identity, forcible adoption of your own children, filtration camps, and mass graves,” @avalaina tells @JulieNBCNews at an #ACFrontPage event. Watch here: ➡️ bit.ly/4h3OUpv

I still don’t get why Russian citizens of minority backgrounds, let alone Central Asians from entirely separate countries, are expected to care about Navalny or respect his legacy. Some do and it’s fine but many don’t and it’s also fine! A short thread. 1/7
Robert Horvath@RG_Horvath

A new illustration of how postcolonial dogma is used to distort Navalny's legacy and the truth of his life. Acknowledging Navalny's heroism is not to privilege 'the voices of ethnic Russians.' It is to listen to the voice of a persecuted dissident who spoke for millions. 1/7

@polidemitolog Yeah, completely plausible. This might be the last free election in the United States.

@EricaMarat @YMonastyrskyi @RG_Horvath @navalny But it's not a long explanation, it's a very short one, designed to persuade Russians about why they should recognize Ukraine's 1991 borders. It's also 100% correct, so don't see cause for complaint.

It's a sign of our disjointed, disinformed times that I've been asked by a serious scholar for proof that @navalny 'actually tried to fight against the war' and was 'not of imperialist views.' The proof is out there. It's not hard to find. And it's irrefutable. 1/15

@peterpalmer901 @advokytsya @RG_Horvath OK, there’re numerous proofs of him being a nationalist and a bigot. Any proofs he actually tried to fight against the war? Maybe there’s a record of him not being of imperialistic views?

@MattLightCrim Well, some of us did. Looks like searching for the good stuff in mysterious Russia is making a comeback.

@EricaMarat Fair. But at least we have shown that we are capable of updating our assessments based on new information.

This thread really nails the problem. The US views the invasion of Ukraine as a problem in/for US relations with Russia, which needs to be ironed out in order to preserve the relationship or at least enable its future repair. Russia must be chastised (mildly) but not alienated.
Ruth Deyermond@ruth_deyermond

It’s as if the Biden foreign policy team see dealing with Russia in Ukraine as a significant but ultimately limited problem relating just to Russia, which can eventually be solved by some kind of compromise peace agreement.

@YMonastyrskyi @RG_Horvath @navalny What was the opportunistic angle of writing the following in his prison diary that would only be seen after he died? x.com/bdtaylor_SU/st…
Brian Taylor@bdtaylor_SU

I've seen many more comments re: the @NewYorker Navalny cover than the actual content of his prison diaries. Here is what he says about the prospect of dying in prison. "So what if that comes to pass? Worse things happen." His example? The war against 🇺🇦: newyorker.com/magazine/2024/…

Kadyrov declaring a literal blood feud against Dagestan’s biggest oligarch and ordering his people to shoot his competitors in Moscow while the head of Dagestan says he will offer all kinds of support to the oligarch is a demo version of what I had in mind when I wrote this. 1/2
Dor Shabashewitz@shabashewitz

Just one potential scenario is that with Moscow getting weaker and losing too much money and manpower in Ukraine in the future, one of Putin’s governors/officials from within the system will realize he can proclaim some sort of “people’s republic” and go unpunished. 4/13
