It’s been voted the saddest country song of all time on several occasions. It has also been listed as one of the greatest songs of all time, period. Country fans know it well, and even non-fans of the genre have likely shed a tear after hearing it for the first time. I’m talking about George Jones’ 1980 heartbreaker, “He Stopped Loving Her Today”. It’s a tragedy from start to heartwrenching finish. I imagine quite a few listeners who got broken up with in 1980 played it on repeat. It might just be the perfect breakup song. And the story behind this country classic will always tug at my heartstrings. Read more below: americansongwriter.com/the-heartbreak…

Returning to Later with Jools Holland after nearly 9 years… I wish you could all witness the production of this show. 6 performers, one room, one floor, one amazing host and most impressive ballet of camera operators moving seamlessly between bands in front of a LIVE audience …It’s a thing of beauty. Thank you for having me back, Jools. Have us back again won’t you? Big love !!

Before Ashley McBryde released hit songs like “The Devil I Know”, she was an aspiring artist hoping to get her footing in country music. While the country star did more than find her footing, winning a Grammy Award and becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry, she never forgot the time she worked for the legendary Dolly Parton. Even a country singer herself, nothing compares to being in the presence of an icon like Dolly. And according to McBryde, she kept a gift from the singer for 20 years.  On Wednesday, McBryde sat down with BBC Radio 2 to discuss her career in country music. During the conversation, the singer was asked about her connection with Dolly when she first moved to Nashville. Having nothing but love for the hitmaker, McBryde never forgot how Dolly once offered her a stick of lip balm.  Read more below: americansongwriter.com/ashley-mcbryde…

In 1982, John Mellencamp had his second consecutive No. 1 single, with “Jack & Diane”. Mellencamp is the sole writer of the song. It appears on his American Fool album.  “Jack & Diane” is more than four minutes long, which is why it’s a bit surprising that it became a four-week No. 1 hit. But the reason for the lengthy tune isn’t just because of the lyrics in the story song. Instead, there’s a significant drum solo in the middle, an idea that Mellencamp got from Phil Collins’ debut solo single, “In The Air Tonight”, out in 1981. Horton Avenue in Nashville was renamed as DeFord Bailey Avenue between 14th and 16th Avenue, crossing Music Row three years ago. Bailey was known as a “harmonica wizard,” one of the original stars of the Grand Ole Opry, and its first African American performer. #MusicIsLegend youtu.be/lhMHErXnpJM youtu.be/lhMHErXnpJM?si…

On May 18th, 1952, George Strait was born in Poteet, Texas. He grew up on a massive ranch in the Lone Star State. Like many other kids his age, Strait listened to the Beatles and other British Invasion bands. Later, he found his love for country music and became one of the most successful artists in the genre’s history. More importantly, he is credited with bringing traditional-sounding country music back to the mainstream in the 1980s. Read more below: americansongwriter.com/born-in-texas-…

Loretta Lynn was no stranger to controversy. Ever since her debut “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl”, out in 1960, Lynn made it clear that she would sing the music she wanted to sing, even if some people disapproved. Two of her biggest songs, “The Pill” and “One’s On The Way”, were initially banned on the radio, deeming the content too controversial at the time. “One’s On The Way” came out in 1971, followed by “The Pill” in 1975. Innocuous by today’s standards, the songs are both about women having babies—or choosing not to—subjects that were largely taboo at the time. Still, Lynn forged ahead, partly because she didn’t understand why they were controversial. “The Pill’ and ‘One’s on the Way’, they were the ones that really gave me a rough time,” Lynn tells Songfacts. “And I didn’t understand that, because everybody was taking the pill. I didn’t have the money to take it when they put it out. But I couldn’t understand why they were raising such a fuss over taking the pill. And with ‘One’s on the Way’, I thought everybody had a baby. I sure did. I didn’t think anybody else was too good to.” Read more below: americansongwriter.com/loretta-lynn-d…

In 1979, Charlie Daniels released “The Devil Went Down To Georgia“. The biggest single of his career, Daniels wrote the song. He also shares songwriting credit with his band members, Tom Crain, Joel DiGregorio, Fred Edwards, Charles Hayward, and Jim Marshall. It appears on his Million Mile Reflections album. Daniels later revealed that the idea for the song came from a poem he read in high school, called “The Mountain Whippoorwill”. “We had gone in and rehearsed, written, and recorded the music for our Million Mile Reflections album,” Daniels tells Songfacts. “And all of a sudden we said, ‘We don’t have a fiddle song.’ I don’t know why we didn’t discover that. But we went out, and we took a couple of days’ break from the recording studio, and went into a rehearsal studio. And I just had this idea, ‘The Devil went down to Georgia.’” “The idea may have come from an old poem that Stephen Vincent Benet wrote many, many years ago,” he adds. “He didn’t use that line. But I just started, and the band started playing, and first thing you know we had it down.” Read more below: americansongwriter.com/a-high-school-…
