LOS ALGORITMOS CONTRA EL PLACER DE ELEGIR LA LECTURA. No hace mucho, como de costumbre, entré en mi librería de confianza. Busqué durante algún tiempo un libro en particular. Como no lo hallé, tuve que pedírselo al dueño, quien amablemente lo encargó tras comprobar la falta de existencias. Cuando estaba a punto de salir con las manos vacías, escuché a un cliente preguntar por otro título; él sí tuvo más suerte. Sin embargo, aquella escena trivial me instó a reflexionar sobre cómo la hiperconectividad ha domesticado, en buena medida, nuestra antigua inclinación al asombro. Comencé entonces a echar de menos aquellas horas en la biblioteca pública, cuando recorría los estantes sin rastrear nada, pero abierto a que todo me encontrase. Pasaba el dedo por los lomos, leía las contraportadas, hojeaba los volúmenes... Y, de pronto, de entre aquella multitud de historias, una (solo una) se venía conmigo. La mayoría de las veces no sabía quién era el autor, cuáles sus afinidades políticas o qué virtudes y defectos regían su vida personal. No importaba. Para mí, Evelyn Waugh podría ser una señora inglesa de alta cuna y Carson McCullers, un tímido caballero. Daba igual. La sorpresa formaba parte también de la lectura. La cuestión era entregarse al negro sobre blanco sin expectativas prestadas ni prejuicios heredados de las mil y una opiniones. Hoy, por el contrario, tendemos a visitar la librería con la decisión tomada. Los algoritmos han hecho el rastreo por nosotros y han tejido con frecuencia el mismo tapiz para todos: mismos apellidos, mismos títulos, mismas recomendaciones. Digamos que se nos suele entregar antes el contexto que el texto, lo que alimenta tanto los recelos como las expectativas. Es por este motivo que quizá ya haya llegado el momento de devolverle al azar la importancia que siempre tuvo. ¿Quién sabe? Es posible que así regresen los gustos heterogéneos y que la genialidad, esa que nunca está de moda y que en consecuencia nunca pasa, salga de su escondite. Podemos retomar todavía la creencia de que los libros susurran nuestro nombre, eligiéndonos incluso antes de que sepamos el suyo.
