I'm hunting through my hyena photos for something and thought I'd share a few gems again. Every time I do this I find myself completely boggled that people think these animals are ugly and uncharismatic

Something about water makes hyenas immediately revert into enormous children. Equally true for wild hyenas where I've seen distinguished 15+ year old females romp around like cubs in a puddle

@AnneWHilborn Can speak from experience that there's nothing funnier than watching a squirrel scrape futilely at hard-packed dirt, plop an acorn down, pat the fully visible acorn with its little hands and run off like "hell yeah mission accomplished"

Ok scrub jay now trying to store an acorn in bark mulch. This seems like a better strategy.

@wild_sonja They're all Northern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus)! They just have a ton of color variation, which I love so much.

Today's squirrel update: rattlesnakes! The large number of rattlesnakes at Briones Regional Park pose a great risk to the California ground squirrel pups. Meanwhile, adults are immune to their venom, and will even actively try to chase the snakes away from their burrows...
