But the audacity of a Mexican American woman saying academic freedom still exists, apparently that’s a scandal for the far right. The ugly truth is nothing will ever be enough for them until universities are overwhelmingly white like they were 100 years ago.

And furthermore, academic freedom is a good thing! We want professors and grad students to be free to research what they want to research and teach what they want to teach (presuming anyone wants to take the class). Students are *supposed* to be exposed to a variety of ideas.

The Supreme Court just gutted the Voting Rights Act. Republican legislatures now have a permission slip to follow Texas’ lead: crack and pack Black and Latino voters, call it politics, and dare anyone to stop them. Last year, Texas House Democrats broke quorum because we saw this coming, and we knew we had to fight back. The Voting Rights Act was supposed to stop states like Texas from silencing voters of color. Today’s Supreme Court ruling makes our fight harder — but harder is not impossible, and we are not going anywhere. #txlege
