@springbris @JacquesPaught There's a case like this with a Yugioh card, it's Japanese name is Number 39 Hope King of Wishes. (Nanbāzu Sanjūkyū Kibō'ō Hōpu) You'd think that Hopu is Hope, but it's Kiboo, Hopu means King of Wishes.

@JacquesPaught @ErrorofZ in the example of “torihiki” you’d see trick in the subtitles and think “oh he said trick” because they sound the same, a literal categorical incorrect translation, while in the translated case you could at least hear “cunning” and register it and look it up

the only time i care about this is when i see clips of the pokemon anime where the subs have left the names of the POKEMON untranslated like you are not being serious here you’re just not

one example of performative behavior i've noticed for years is where when a piece of japanese media has a very widely used localized name in english some fans of it will insist on using the japanese name anyway for some reason. very "place, japan" vibes

@JacquesPaught @springbris The only sure fire way to not deal with mistranslation is to learn the language. I understand a little Japanese and I can tell you most subtitles aren't one to one, they often tweak what a sentence is saying based on context and flow in English.

@springbris @ErrorofZ How will I know if it's correct if the character is saying English words that aren't included in the subtitles?

@springbris @ErrorofZ If I have to look shit up anyway then they might as well use whatever is most accurate to the actual words that characters are saying. At least then I know the subs are accurate and not full of localization censorship slop.

@JacquesPaught @springbris Talking about the franchise as a whole. Ofc one of the bigger reason I was watching the sub was the ost. But I recently found an edit that syncs the Japanese ost with the English dub. Going forward I'll probably just watch the new episodes raw until they get edited like that.

@ErrorofZ @springbris Yeah and all the terrible dub music is also "universal" outside of the subs, so you may as well just watch the dub anyway

@springbris @JacquesPaught Then there are words like ジェットコースター (lit. Jetcoaster) that means roller coaster and ピエロ (lit Pierrot), which means clown. Do we leave these words untranslated cause they sounds super similar to the English versions.

@springbris @JacquesPaught Tension is another big one as I mentioned earlier. In English, it means stressful and uncomfortable. In Japanese it means high spirits and lively.

@JacquesPaught @springbris They're not "dub" terms, they're universal outside of the fan subs. Even official Japanese merchandise uses the English names once in a while. Subs are not inherently more accurate then dubs. Pokemon is just one of the few that goes through a lot of changes.

@ErrorofZ @springbris And I want them to be accurate. That's the point of subtitles. If you want shitty dub terms just watch the dub.

@JacquesPaught @springbris It's not bad localization, it's just not aiming to be one for one. I just want to be able to follow the subs from my experience playing the games. And not have to look up what Hell Wheel is in English.

@ErrorofZ @springbris Yes, the translators for the games gave a ton of moves badly localized names, and I don't think fanmade anime subtitles need to suffer because of it. Like, no, that's not Submission. That's literally a Hell Wheel technique.

@JacquesPaught @springbris Games mistake? I will never understand the "Well I understand what they're saying so the subs have to match cause the words in English" There are a lot of Japanese words that are borrowed from English that are English words but mean something else. Like "tension"

@ErrorofZ @springbris The anime should not suffer because the games made mistakes. No, I will not accept "Thunderbolt" as an acceptable translation when the character is literally saying the Japanese word for the number 100,000.

Melancholy Marsh@notthemarsh·
@springbris the Ace Attorney anime released with two official sets of subtitles: Japanese-accurate subs (Ryuichi Naruhodo, ramen noodles) and "dubtitles" (Phoenix Wright, burger ramen). I wish more subbers of heavily localized properties offered this approach.

@JacquesPaught @springbris Yeah but it has an equivalent in English, like how Japan is called Japan in English but not in Japanese. I just don't like that the default for the fan sub is Japanese names and move names. When I just want to watch it to watch it earlier and for the ost.
