The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance is a car that bends logic. On paper, it delivers 805 hp (600 kW) and 1,420 Nm of torque, enabling it to sprint to 100 km/h in just 2.8s (managed 2.75s). Yes, that is quicker than the AMG One hypercar, which boasts over 1,000 hp. At its core, the GT 63 S E Performance packs a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with a rear-mounted elec motor. The motor is linked to a 2-speed gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip diff, fed by a small 6.1 kWh battery that provides a token 12 km or so of EV range. In practice, you'll never bother plugging it in, as a quick stint in Race mode sees the battery shoot up to 100. The system is designed less for economy and more for relentless shove, with the motor acting as a booster rocket when the V8 calls for backup. The result is ferocious. Plant your foot, and the car lunges forward with a violence that's both thrilling and unnerving. The extra weight has not dulled down the drive by any means. On a curvy piece of tarmac, the car is incredibly well-balanced with loads of grip and is actually quite forgiving too. Not everything is perfect, especially when you consider it is meant to be a Grand Tourer. Boot space shrinks from 321 litres to just 182, and the rear seats are little more than luggage space. Should you find yourself in this beast daily, you would probably be able to live with it. The ride, while firm, is compliant at low speeds, and rear-axle steering makes city driving very manageable. The cabin is classic AMG with leather, Alcantara, and carbon fibre accents, as well as an 11.9-inch touchscreen filled with an overload of information and telemetry to geek over.
