According to Edo tradition the edo fabric started with the isekpokin guild → guild of leather workers. clothing in benin emanated from leather before it evolved over time. This fabric in edo is known as Ukpon n’hian, and it was the leading fabric in the kingdom. The benin surcoat, Leather fan, are some of the testament of the skills, the isekpokin guild put in making their fabrics. The guild is headed by an odionwere.

Did You Know!!! The Ìkèlè beads are special coral cyclical or oval neck beads invented by the edo people and used by members of the Benin Royal Court. The ìkèlè bead is special to the Benin crown as it's used to confirm and give chieftaincy titles to worthy individuals in Benin Kingdom, and the presentation of the ìkèlè beads is the high point of chieftaincy conferment in edo tradition. A tradition that is still practiced in kingdoms that were influenced by the Benin empire. Linguistically; The ìkèlè is an edo word that means a piece of or lump of, ìkèlè ivie - piece of beads because of the nature and shape of the ìkèlè beads. In Ancient Benin Tradition, - The consequences of a none chief putting on an ìkèlè or wearing a counterfeit ìkèlè is Death. - When a chief misplace or loses his ìkèlè the consequences is Death. - When the beads that make up the ìkèlè are heavily scratched, the consequences is Death. According to Williem Bosman, a dutch sailor in the 18th-century noted how the ìkèlè was only worn by nobility "royalty and chiefs" of Benin Kingdom and Nyendael in 1702 reported how two Benin chiefs were executed for losing their ìkèlè. The Benin Akure war was also attributed to deji arakale coveting chief osague ìkèlè beads and refused to return them back to Benin. The Ìkèlè is the ultimate symbol of royal recognition as all grades of chiefs own a piece or more. it's therefore a taboo for a chief to appear before the Oba without the ìkèlè beads on his neck, the penalty is very weighty. After the demise of a chief, his ìkèlè "" is returned back to the palace because it's the Oba's property.

The Edo Ẹzuzu, introduced during the reign of Ogiso Ere, functioned as an important cultural marker within the social and political structure of the ancient Benin Kingdom. It's a peripheral element that distinguished royalty, aristocracy, and elite classes from the general populace. A more distinguishable type of ezuzu was also used by priests and priestess of some deities and divinities. The ezuzu "Handfan" are intricately crafted to depict symbols and scenes of the past by the Isekpokin(the guild of leather workers), from hides, wood, flannels, and cotton.

The establishment of military bases by the Benins became very important and popular to the Benin Kingdom in the 18th century but became a birthed ideology in the 19th century. Prior to the 18th century, the establishment of long-term military bases was not a prominent feature in Benin Chronicles. However, as shifts occurred in the political landscape of districts beyond the kingdom, military strategy evolved. Conquered territories were then strategically designated to host military bases, serving as extensions of royal authority and symbolizing the presence of the Oba in those regions. Igbara Oke, Itaogbolu, Ado Akure, Ighotun housed some of the Benin military bases in the west and the head of this bases "war generals" became the intermediary between the Oba and the King of the town the base was located in, and the locals called them or refer to them as Balikale. Sophie Oluwole (1935–2018) was the first Nigerian woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy. An Edo woman with roots in Igbara-Oke, she stands among the notable modern intellectuals connected to the historic Edo military presence in the town. Her grandfather held the title of Balikale, a position associated with leadership at the Benin war base in Igbara-Oke. To this day, the Edo-descended quarter in the town is locally known as Ado Igbara, reflecting that legacy. On her maternal side, her mother was the daughter of a commander of the Benin military base at Ighotun. However, the exact period during which the military base at Ighotun was established remains unclear in available records. The military base at Itaogbolu was town founded by edo and yoruba settlers was one of the most strategic, because huge portion of this community already had Benin ancestry, so it was not just a base but a training camp for the edo military outside Benin, becoming one of the most strategic bases owned and control by the Benin military council. The Ado Akure base was far more than a military outpost; it functioned as a fully developed settlement within Akure. It was inhabited by Edo traders who distributed goods across Yoruba territories, as well as by aristocrats and warriors who upheld Benin’s authority. This settlement is believed to have existed since the reign of Oba Ewuare, reflecting the long-standing influence of the Benin Kingdom in the region. Tensions, however, escalated during the reign of Deji Arakale of Akure and Oba Osemwende. A major diplomatic crisis occurred when two Benin emissaries, a chief and his wife, were killed on the orders of the Deji. This act was seen as a grave affront to Benin authority. In response, the Oba of Benin launched a full-scale military campaign against Akure, led by prominent war chiefs, including Ezomo and Ologbosere. Following a decisive victory, the Benin Royal Court reasserted control over Akure. To stabilize governance, a prince named Osupa, one of the sons of the late Deji who had earlier been taken to Benin, was installed as the new ruler. Having been raised and instructed within the Benin royal court system, his enthronement ensured loyalty to Benin and reinforced its political and cultural influence in Akure. Otun Ekiti served as a boundary town between the Benin Kingdom and the Oyo Empire. It is regarded as one of the early Benin military outposts, established during the reign of Oba Ehengbuda in the 17th century. The creation of this base is linked to a peace and boundary agreement between Benin and Oyo, with Otun Ekiti functioning as a neutral or demarcation point between the two powers. As part of this arrangement, Benin stationed warriors in the town whose primary responsibility was to monitor and safeguard the boundary, ensuring stability and preventing incursions. This military presence reflects a broader strategic pattern in Benin statecraft, where frontier zones were secured not only through conquest but also through diplomacy, treaties, and the establishment of controlled outposts.
