At the recommendation of my Consigliere, @BillyGNippers, with no offspring at The Manor, the Lady and I went to dinner at Baso. Just around the corner is this wonderful Basque-inspired, live-fire cooking with local Texas ingredients. One of the benefits of living in a diverse city like Houston….access to so many great restaurants on any given night. The native NYers cannot turn down coffee and cheesecake. Their basque cheesecake and French press coffee is truly……..elevated.

Wild Spring Dunes Tom Doak -2026 Mt Enterprise TX From the family that has given us many golf destination resorts, is this newest edition to East Texas. Left the Manor in Houston at 5:30am, drive, played, drive, home at 4:30pm. The course is what you would expect from Tom Doak. Not a long course, generous off the tee- wide fairways and playing corridors. Miss the fairway and you will have hard time finding it amongst the native brush. Good variation of driving options with use of centerline obstacles. Several downhill, uphill (blind), tee shots. He layered obstacles and added pitch in fairways landing zones to create added difficulty, so your drives must be more precise within the wide areas. Approach shots- varied with ability to feed the ball into and on the greens. Green size and angle match the shot he is expecting the players to hit. Longer shots more room for misses, short shots, less room. As with most of his greens, sometimes, a short side miss leaves and easier par save than a conservative shot on the green. Greens- typical of his designs. Lots of pockets and pitch to feed the ball. A wide or after miss may yield a harder lag to reach some tougher hole locations. Fall offs and collection areas abound for misjudged shot on distance and direction. His ability to slightly offset the green angle to the players eye is wonderful. Greens were quick and rolling out and that makes for some extra thought on lags. You could feed and die the ball at the cups. Real fun. Overall: very fun and enjoyable for all skill sets. All the par 5s are reachable in two shots. He created two brilliant reachable 4’s, and he varied the remaining par 4’s with length and rolling the holes with the terrain. Par 3s all play is different directions, and styles that reflect their lengths. Course is wall to wall, tee to green Zoysia, a pleasure to create iron shots off. Some spots are still growing in. And as stated miss the FW and its rustic native bushes and cactus. Note- there is no operational range or putting green. They have a net to hit shots into and a masseuse to help get you loose. The clubhouse is still, a trailer with a helpful and courteous staff of caring professionals. Outdoor kitchen is there to provide. Here is a look at the scorecard and some holes.
