@JTweetsTennis To be fair, MLax is only at UVA this year as a bit of a one-off. It’s typically hosted in an NFL stadium (Baltimore, Boston, Philly very common), just not this year because of preparation for the World Cup.

It’s a competitive advantage, yes. TAMU’s HC Weaver says it’s a 10% boost. But it’s actually common for non-revenue sports to host NCAA championships at college campuses. Just this spring: Men’s volleyball - UCLA Men’s lacrosse - UVA Track - Oregon Women’s Lax - Northwestern
David Leonard@DrDavidLeonard

@JTweetsTennis Honest question: what other sports play their national championship on the campus of a school that's potentially competing for that championship? Isn't that an unfair advantage for that school?

@plez24 Steve I agree. I think that the issue is players coming into college at 20+ years old, or staying for 6+ years with eligibility loopholes. 21 and 22 year olds shouldn’t be freshman barring required mandatory military service.

@EthanMosz Have 2 kids in juniors & lots of talk of what's the point they'll give spots to experienced, older internationals. Think a respectable #, say 50-75 % Americans rostered, would be good for the juniors knowing they have a shot. Maybe better is limit older freshmen?

@steverbridges And what do you make of guys like Steve Johnson and John Isner (products of college tennis if you weren’t aware) saying that international players aren’t an issue, that Americans should learn to just compete and get better? Isner went to a public school, by the way.

I am an American Tax Payer, I should have a say in where my dollars go should I not? The University of Virginia is a public institution, which typically receives state funding. When my daughter played she competed for scholarships against these foreign players and almost all of them did not go pro. So give the scholarships to kids here who will support our communities long term.

@steverbridges So the issue just applies to public schools? What about foreign players that come at 17 and wind up supporting the community long term? Or foreign players who spend years at American academies?

@steverbridges Rafa Jodar played at UVA last year. He’s currently 34 in the world and not yet 20. Which part of your above applies to him?

@zager1025 Well for one he hasn’t been at USTA in 12 years, but I’m pretty sure I could argue that his tenure as GM of player development (08-14) pretty much sets the stage for the dark ages of American tennis.

Odd scenes: after getting broken for 3-3, Badenhorst ran to the bathroom and has been incurring point penalties for every point in Gorzny’s service game. “Easy hold” Gorzny tells his teammates.

@EthanMosz @j_j_j_t_m I just step back and ask myself, why speak out now? Of all the levers he could pull, he chose one that makes the product worse, and endangers many more programs. Something feels off.

We’re a month away from Pat et. al. hyping up Rafa Jodar’s college experience at RG. Can’t have it both ways. We’ve been pitching college as a “path to the pros.” Is that only the case for Americans? Is that your pitch, really?
Patrick McEnroe@PatrickMcEnroe

NCAA men’s tennis Sweet 16 snapshot — by my count: 20 American starters in 96 singles spots. 12 from just two teams: Stanford and Ohio State. That leaves 8 American starters across the other 14 teams. The issue is the overall numbers — and what they mean for American players below the elite level.

@zager1025 @j_j_j_t_m Pat *seems* interested in the product, yet has spent more time pushing against some of the best players and most interesting stories in the sport, as opposed to using his relatively large influence to draw pro tennis fans into college tennis as a product.

@EthanMosz @j_j_j_t_m It'll presumably boost revenue for US tennis academies, if more parents can see the ROI. McEnroe runs a for-profit tennis academy. College tennis has never been more appealing, yet most US tennis fans don't consume it. That's the problem *someone* has to solve for.

@zager1025 @j_j_j_t_m Not sure I buy that it’ll Americans towards tennis academies, and reality is the JMTA does very well already (and is expensive). It would be more helpful if Pat (and John) decided to invest themselves in helping grow the interest in the sport through their TV platforms.

@j_j_j_t_m The idea that the way to “fix” college tennis (not currently revenue generating) is to lower the quality of the product by scaring away/preventing intl talent from playing college tennis is so untethered from reality. Worsening the product will boost revenue? Seriously?

Feels like the EXACT right time to remind people that Rafa Jodar and Joao Fonseca were both a part of ONE recruiting class at UVA. Yes, Joao never made it to Grounds, but... still. Looking forward to watching them battle in Madrid.
