The Police Chief who saw the Isle of Man through the Covid era retired from policing almost 3 years ago now, to take on a new role on the island, with bereavement charity Cruse.
Gary Roberts, who retired from his position in the chief role at the Isle of Man Constabulary (@iompolice) in 2023, attended the 12 January 2022 Operation Talla meeting of police chiefs, when the public reporting of Covid-19 alleged crimes was on the agenda.
Gary had served in policing roles for almost 39 years.
Following leaving the Isle of Man Constabulary, Gary was appointed to the board of Cruse Bereavement Support Isle of Man (@cruseiom).
On joining Cruse IOM, Gary commented...
"I know the difference they can make and look forward to working with them. I realise the impact a death can have on individuals and families, particularly a suicide so to be working as part of this charity is important to me.”

The Channel Island of Guernsey, Covid Policing and the Structure Beneath.... During Covid-19, policing in Guernsey did not operate in isolation. It was embedded within a centralised command framework, including the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre (JESCC) - a multi-agency structure coordinating police, health and wider state response. Public Health led. Police enforced. Data and decision-making flowed across agencies. This is not speculative. It is reflected in official scrutiny evidence describing: • “very strong lines of command” • integrated information-sharing between health and law enforcement • coordinated operational control across services Now consider the parallel - In England and Wales, evidence illustrates the existence of the Criminal Justice System Strategic Command (CJSSC) - a cross-agency body aligning policing, courts and justice functions during the same period. Different jurisdictions - Same structural logic JESCC: emergency services coordination at operational level. CJSSC: justice system coordination at systemic level. The question is not whether coordination occurred, as it clearly did. The question is how far that coordination extended and what it meant for the handling of public reports, evidence and access to justice. Once policing is placed inside a command structure, it is no longer acting alone and when decisions are taken within such structures, accountability does not disappear - it just becomes harder to see.
