Visuals reach the audience before the article itself. Let us ensure that LGBTQIA+ individuals are portrayed with respect and dignity without unnecessary exposure.

Once the identity is revealed, the harm cannot be undone. Therefore, let us ensure responsible reporting. Legal source: Section 365C of the Penal Code of Sri Lanka

Sinhala reporting often uses outdated terms such as "mehekariya" to describe domestic workers. Such outdated terms can carry social judgement, especially in sensational contexts. Let us ensure that the terms used to refer to occupations describe labour fairly and accurately.

Blame-shifting can occur subtly through comments on clothing, behaviour, relationships or personal history. This can cause psychological harm, discourage reporting of violence and obstruct justice. Ethical journalism must ensure accountability lies with the perpetrator.

NB: The news story example was reported in the context of a husband assuming that his wife had burned a stack of books which contained a discarded book in which he had hidden a 5000 rupee note. [2/2]

Gendered ridicule does not add relevant information. It introduces bias and reinforces the idea that women are naturally less capable, less rational, or less credible than men. Let us not use expressions that turn gender into a harmful explanation or justification. [1/2]

In Sinhala reporting, terms such as "ganika" are often used to heighten sensationalism. Yet the term carries moral judgement and may reinforce stigma. Using neutral terms such as "lingika shramika" (sex worker), where relevant, supports more respectful reporting.

Language sets the tone for how audiences treat real people. Neutral terminology reduces avoidable stigma and minimises harm. Let us always use respectful language that prioritises accuracy, respect, and care.

The media sometimes uses humour, wordplay, or euphemisms to describe sexual violence, which can trivialise harm and obscure the crime’s seriousness. As seen in Report B, clear, direct language better reflects the gravity of the offence and respects survivors’ experiences.

As seen in report A, terms that imply shame or impurity can stigmatise the survivor and distract from the perpetrator’s actions. Ethical journalism calls for a survivor-centred approach that clearly and accurately describes the offence, without reinforcing shame.

Describing women through appearance changes how news is understood. It shifts attention away from the facts and can lead audiences to assess women against a perceived standard of attractiveness. Look closely: would you choose Report A or Report B?

LGBTQIA+ identity is often highlighted in stories about harm but rarely in positive or everyday contexts. Over time, this selective visibility can create a misleading association between identity and negative events. Where identity is relevant, report it accurately, with context.

In interviews, women are often asked about marriage, childcare or balancing roles, even when not relevant. This can shift focus away from their professional credibility. A useful check: would the same question be asked of a man in the same role? If not, reconsider the question.

Have you come across reporting that describes women in certain professions as outside of the norm? Such framing can reinforce negative stereotypes and shift attention away from skills, expertise, and achievements. Let's keep the focus on expertise.
