Thank you to @DrEmilyFinch, @_marstudio, @RedLippedAstro, @200micron and @JiaoJiaoLi_Syd for the fascinating science! If you have more questions, jump onto each thread and leave them for the Superstars to answer😊 #SSoS21 continues tomorrow Wed 6 Oct at 12-1pm AEDT. #SSoS21

English

@JiaoJiaoLi_Syd Thank you Jiao Jiao, that sounds very promising!. If you have any questions about this exciting area of work, now is the time :) #SSoS21

In parallel, we’re looking into bioactive materials to patch up large holes and help tissues regrow. Hoping to make lives better for hundreds of millions worldwide with painful bones and joints, stay tuned to the wonders of #TissueEngineering! 5/5 #SSoS21

English

Did you know that at least 1 in 8 people globally, old and young, are affected by bone and joint disorders? They are painful, chronic, and the reduced mobility increases risk of death from cardiovascular and other diseases. 1/5 #SSoS21

English

Our last speaker for this session of the #SuperstarsofSTEM Twitter fest #SSoS21 is Dr Jiao Jiao Li @JiaoJiaoLi_Syd! Coming to us from @UTSFEIT, Jiao Jiao will tell us all about ‘Regenerative therapies for bones and joints’. #SSoS21

@200micron Gonna put my hand up and admit I originally thought taphonomy was a typo of taxonomy... #LEARNING!

1⃣Cambrian #smallshellyfossils (SSF) are usually pieces of exoskeletons made by some of the first complex animals in the #fossil record. Many are ancient relatives of modern animals, but some remain “enigmatic”, their position on the #treeoflife still uncertain. #SSoS21

English

@200micron Thanks Marissa! Great fossil naming 🙂Question time! #SSoS21
English

5⃣AND some Cambrian SSF had global distributions, so we can use them to reconstruct the position of ancient landmasses. A species I named Dailyatia decobruta (“handsome beast”) is found in Aus and Antarctica, evidence that these continents were joined in the Cambrian. #SSoS21

English

Next we welcome Dr Marissa Betts @200micron, Paleontologist and Geologist @UniNewEngland, with her talk ‘Cambrian small shelly fossils: An enigma, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in taphonomic bias’. #SSoS21

English

@RedLippedAstro Thank you Clare! If you have questions, fire away! #SSoS21

1⃣ 🌌 In the cores of #galaxies, HUGE #blackholes sip on a diet of gas, dust and stars from a circling accretion disk. 🥤
🤷♀️Where does it all go? No one knows...
🔐But this inner region seems to be key to understanding the evolution and dynamics of the whole galaxy.
#SSoS21 💋
English

Next speaker at #SSoS21 is Dr Clare Kenyon @RedLippedAstro. Astrophysicist and Outreach & Teaching Fellow @UniMelb, Clare will be talking ‘Supermassive Blackholes: The Heart, Soul & Terror of Galaxies’.

English

@_marstudio @MDAP_Unimelb Thank for you that great presentation Mar! We’re now open for questions :) #SSoS21
English

5⃣ And sure, #teamScience is not incentivized or rewarded in traditional academia, but things are changing! Check out new initiatives like @MDAP_Unimelb, ucl.ac.uk/arc, monash.edu/researchinfras…, vic.gov.au/victorian-cent…, and many more! #SSoS21

1⃣ There’s so much to learn about in this world, and each one of us only manage to grasp such a tiny proportion of it! #interdisciplinary #collaboration allows you to gain new knowledge constantly from experts in their fields, and listen up, you even GET PAID FOR IT! 😯#SSoS21

English

Now we have Dr Maria del Mar Quiroga @_marstudio, from @UniMelb, to tell us ‘What’s the value of interdisciplinary collaboration?’ #SSoS21

English

Thank you, Emily @DrEmilyFinch . Fascinating and exciting! Now is the time to ask Emily your burning questions, by replying to her thread. #SSoS21
English

First up we have Dr Emily Finch @DrEmilyFinch, Geologist, and Beamline Scientist @ausynchrotron, presenting her talk ‘Critical minerals for a green energy future’. Thanks Emily! #SSoS21

@chellebalez You get it for being in surf life saving?? I knew I should get back into volunteering...
English

As a surf life saver I fortunately have access to the #CovidVaccine, so I’ve just booked myself in for my first dose 😁 Feeling very grateful and completely in awe of the science effort that has brought us to this point!
