There are a lot of pricey literacy conferences out there, and then there's the Excellent Schools Washington conference in Seattle, May 1. Registration is $25! I'll be presenting, and really excited to see the keynote, @Doug_Lemov. Registration link below.

@clharrington024 @oliviajune82 He has since clarified his position on RR as research shifted. As a lot of people did. I don't agree with him on everything but he's no fraud, has been incredibly helpful whenever I've asked a question, and is one of the best interpreters of reading science for a lay audience.

I think you are being generous. He has intentionally obscured his association with Wonders. Any quality teacher who finds out he has his imprint there will completely dismiss him. You cannot advocate for the best practices in education and then consult for Wonders. Totally incompatible. I’m past the point of being politically correct. These people sit in their ivory towers and do interviews and meanwhile the students cannot read!!!! I should have known better though, I truly only trust the people who signed the 2002 open letter against Reading Recovery. His name wasn’t there. Here’s the link: wrightslaw.com/info/read.rr.l…).

Timothy Shanahan has positioned himself as an “expert.” You hear his name in education circles uttered like God. And yet, under scrutiny he: -never graduated high school (according to Grok) -taught elementary school for exactly 3 years -all his advance degrees are in colleges of education, which we know are absolute dumpster fires of terrible ideas and policies. -CONSULTED ON THE GARBAGE WONDERS program This dude is a fraud and a joke. Bottom line…..all these “experts” in education (who aren’t even teaching) need to go. I only take seriously the expert wisdom of true scientists. Education should be 100% governed by neuroscience, not pseudoscience, which is what education degrees are.
Olivia Mullins@oliviajune82

I have criticized Timothy Shanahan because he would frequently weigh-in on knowledge-building without disclosing his role as an author on basal curriculum programs. In this article he is cited as a "veteran reading researcher and professor emeritus" governing.com/policy/souther…

@ksliz22 It probably depends on your state. In Texas it was fairly common for schools only to teach ELA and math. You'd get writing, science, and social studies mostly in the year they were tested. If you had a content-lite ELA program, kids really wouldn't get much sci/SS at all.

@EvidentlyR How do you teach reading with no content? Science/social studies are disciplinary content same as math and literature. Do people just think elementary is just babysitting?

Is there any evidence that elementary schools teach no content, or is this just more attacking teachers/public education as a way of profiting?

@VinceBoley We thought about it for our new school but I’m worried it’s too complex for a startup. I’d like to learn more.

I am looking to research and do a deep dive into UFLI--I'm hearing great things, and I wanna see what it's all about. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I should start?

Text Tracking also heightens the communal, analog, joyful nature of reading books together. And I think that's something we can all use. (15/15)

...which was an idea I'd never even thought of in my own text analysis. You can read more details about it in my book, Reading Beyond the Basics. My biggest tip: gradually release control and let student insights/questions drive the process. (14/15) a.co/d/09ZJJn1F

One of my favorite reading routines is one I call "Text Tracking" - and when I wrote my book, Reading Beyond the Basics (link below), it was one of the most enjoyable sections to research and write. Here's a little bit about how and why I use it: (1/15)
