Every day I get asked for updates on my son, Aiden, who is 12 years old and went DKA on December 23rd, 2025, and spent 16 days in the intensive care unit at Rochester in Minnesota, the top rated pediatric hospital in the entire world he had to be helicoptered too, as he was almost dead... and the #1 rated hospital for his specific condition. They are literally conducting trials and research at this hospital to cure Type 1. He got the best of the very best care possible. The last photo was one shortly after we got home, where he got to enjoy a new hospital style bed that can sit him up, and reunite with his Brother and Sister (not pictured). Yesterday, for the first time since coming home, Aiden had the strength to go outside and play the way children do with his brother. It was the single most joyous moment of 2026 for me - watching Aiden finally getting back to being a kid again. It hasn't been an easy 5 months since getting home. For those unaware of everything: DKA is deadly. People do die from it. Around 5,000 people die from DKA yearly. It is a condition caused by undiagnosed type 1 (which is common). I don't want to revisit every scary detail of those 16 days, because we were told by the doctors on multiple occasions that this particular day could be his last. It was so touch and go. And then on top he had massive brain swelling as DKA was causing his body to attack his mind. We were told it would be a very long recovery for Aiden to be... Aiden again - whatever form that looks like after he almost died and his brain was attacked. And yes, he hates this. He cries weekly about his condition. He absolutely hates shots and due to insurance being dick holes, he still doesn't have a dexcom or insulin pump, which means the needle hating kid is being stabbed upwards of 10 times a day just to keep him alive and safe, still... almost half a year removed from what happened. He is the definition of strength. They should put a photo of him next to the word in the dictionary. Along with many other kids suffering and fighting through various conditions, cancers, and diseases. Honestly, I was always viewed as the rock - the glue - the one who is strongest in the family and keeps everything together. I don't have shit on Aiden. He's stronger than us all. Since coming home, Aiden buried himself in school. He needed to distract himself and he still needs to daily. He is presently a straight A 7th grader. Kind of worried when Summer begins tbh, but we're considering a camp with other diabetes kids so he can not feel alone in his struggle this summer. It's expensive but, we'll sort it out. Many have asked as well when I am going to do a fund raiser to get a cure for Type 1. My lord, how badly I want to do this - I donate a small amount ($25) every single month to help find a cure for my son. But that's because it's all I can afford. With my own medical stuff going on with a surgery later this year, and everything my son has been through - then the mental stress on the entire family daily: I'm drowning a bit. Financially. Mentally. Physically some days. No, I am not asking for more donations - you guys have done enough and as much debt as we're in from all of this and my future upcoming procedure - we're going to be okay. The bills will get paid over time and the important part is he is still with us, and I bounce back from my surgery to be there for him. I have mostly kept talk about him or my family away from the internet since we got home - but you guys literally paid our bills in January. You paid for our hotel stay when he was in the hospital. You even unbeknown, helped pay for some of his medical treatments. Aiden is still with us I like to believe in large part due to all of you. I do believe in the power of prayer, and witnessed a literal miracle happen in that hospital. So, as we get closer to summer and Aiden finally had the strength to be a kid at least for one day - I just wanted to say thank you yet again. He becomes a teenager this month. The amazing medical staff he has, and all of you and our family, is why he gets to be a teenager this month. Thank you so much, from the bottom of all of our hearts. Likely no more updates on anything regarding my family and Aiden, until the anniversary of the day he got sick.
