COVID took one of my best friends Thursday night. Cholly Naranjo was more than a major leaguer, he was family. Our relationship was special despite our almost 50-year age gap. The words didn't come easy. A thread. baseballhappenings.net/2022/01/cholly…

Minneapolis Millers phenom Willie Mays was in a movie theater in Sioux City, Iowa on this date in 1951 when he received a message to report back to the team hotel. The New York Giants were calling him up to the majors! The Giants took out a full-page ad in the Minneapolis paper apologizing for taking Mays away 🤣 In 35 games with the Millers, Mays hit .477 with eight home runs, 30 RBI, and 38 runs scored. The Giants went to the World Series, and Mays won National League Rookie of the Year.

Not a lot of guys could do this lol Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton… and Frank Howard, the only hitter that Brooks Robinson admitted actually scared him while playing third base 🤯

If you are selling trading cards or any other products on eBay, CollX , whatnot or any other platform. A must have is a thermal printer . It takes up a small amount of space and the best part no ink cartridges. Each label is self sticking so no more taping your labels . Just peel and stick it right on the package . Here is the one I use . If you have recently got one let me know What you think and how it’s going.

@JustinStirewalt He brought it back next week, but Dick went to the hospital right before their next lunch and died that day. I still have the postcard and the note from my friend.

@JustinStirewalt I wound up with one of his last autographs. My friend was part of his "lunch bunch." He brought Dick a HOF postcard to sign one week before he died. When my friend got home, he realized the pen ran out. 1/2

@tyromper A growing issue, if we aren't there already, is the complete lack of an in-between option for most sports after age 12. Rec league disappears in most areas. It's travel or bust. Tough for the late bloomers and kids who want to play but can't / don't want to invest in travel ball.

98% of parents would be better putting their kids in school sports & YMCA Rec leagues instead of wasting $10,000 a year on traveling sports teams from age 8-18. Invest that $100,000 for your kid instead & gift them a big down payment on their first home. Let them play multiple sports & don't specialize. Let them be a kid & enjoy life instead of everything being CAN WE SECURE A SCHOLARSHIP. A dad told me he spent around $160k in traveling baseball, coaches, equipment, etc. & his kid got a D2 scholarship worth around 5k a year....... A lot of youth sports is a scam & money grab. *If your kid is super gifted & super INTERNALLY MOTIVATED & loves it, this isn't for you...... but that's 2%.
Lenore Skenazy@FreeRangeKids

Sandlot it ain't. Youth sports now $40 B industry: "Teenagers on travel teams are rolling into weekend tournaments wearing a few thousand dollars of apparel, equipment & swag. Avg family spending on baseball increased nearly 70% between 2019 and 2024." wsj.com/business/retai…

@HannahDCox I listened to too much Dave Ramsey when I was younger and it messed up my relationship with money, not only for myself, but in my relationships. I don't have any debt, but it took awhile to give myself permission to spend. There needs to be a balance too.

This is an under discussed issue in modern dating. I was Dave Ramsey-ed from a young age and never had credit card debt. I paid my student loans off steadily and (thanks to parental help) only had like $20k to begin with there. While dating it was borderline impossible to find a man who was in a better financial position than me. And I lived in big cities with higher income earners. Women aren’t good-digging most of the time, they just don’t want to put themselves in a worse financial position than they’d be in alone and that’s VALID.

@MitchStein6666 @DodgersTailgate These are union negotiated benefits that came from years of players who made far less having inferior benefits, or if at all (see the pre-1980 group). It's security the union negotiated for their labor that does protect their family in case things go awry.

@DodgersTailgate Considering he made more in his career than about 99% of the people on the planet, I would hope his pension and health benefits would not be necessary for him and his family to live a normal life.

Before retiring, Chris Taylor was able to complete 10 years of service time. The Taylor family is now entitled to top-tier lifetime health coverage and a full pension of around $300K accessible at the age of 62.

@AaronGogley It's disappointing there are few, if any, in-between options in most sports where kids can play for let's say $500-$1k for the season. I see too many skilled players miss out, especially in baseball and volleyball b/c the cost is too much to dive further into the sport. 3/3

@AaronGogley Most kids (including myself) get into sport because it's fun and challenging. I was lucky enough to play college and not spend a ton on travel ball because we had weekend leagues here that cost a few hundred per season and were good enough to get us there. 2/x

This is correct. If you just didn’t play sports or played some rec league you could save the money for college But playing youth sports isn’t about getting a scholarship. And playing in college is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The window is very short.
Coach Vint@coachvint

I talked a dad who told me he spent $10k a year on travel baseball between tourneys, travel, and gear for his son. He got a partial scholarship to D-2 school. If he had put the $10k in a mutual fund each year, he would have had about $190,000. The scholarship was $5k a year.

@russell_rivera One year we had a playoff game in SI and while it took me like 75-90 minutes to drive from uptown, some of our students took over 2 hours to get there because of the delays in between connections. It's tough when any Manhattan team that isn't near the ferry has to play in SI.

On Tuesday, my son is pitching in a 2A quarterfinal playoff game, which starts at 330 pm. If i were to take public transit, it would take twice as long as by car. And this is why some Manhattanites have vehicles.

New Yorkers aren’t fooled, @CMShaunAbreu — When a multibillion-dollar corporation like @Uber writes you a $259,000 check, they aren’t doing it out of civic generosity. They’re buying a return on their investment. New Yorkers deserve to know whose interests you’re serving.
