Warmest thanks to The Very Revd Jonathan Greener, Dean of @ExeterCathedral, who will retire this July. A former Dean of Wakefield for 10 years, Jonathan was instrumental in our major cathedral restoration works. We wish Jonathan and Pamela every blessing in retirement.

The Very Revd Jonathan Greener, Dean of Exeter, has announced that he is to retire this coming July. Jonathan has been Dean of Exeter since November 2017, having previously served as Dean of Wakefield in West Yorkshire for 10 years. He has led the cathedral community through a period of healing and consolidation in the early years, and more recently through a major development project, which has seen the building of a new cloister and Treasures Exhibition, and the renewal of the cathedral quire and East End. Jonathan says: “Earlier this week, I reached the venerable age of 65, so, after 18 years as a dean, I think it is time for me to retire and make way for a younger model. I have greatly enjoyed most of those 18 years, and the privilege to serve the Church in this way both in Wakefield and here in Exeter has been enormous. I simply love the building here at the heart of Exeter, and shall miss the community and the music hugely, as well as the opportunity to welcome people to a place that cannot fail to move and inspire. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has made Pamela and me so welcome in Devon, and supported and encouraged us in innumerable ways. We look forward to our move to Torquay, where we can still enjoy this wonderful county without getting under the feet of my successor.” Read more at exeter-cathedral.org.uk/news-events/la… #ExeterCathedral #YourCathedral

⚒️ Stonemasons Update! New grotesques are set to transform the presbytery… The South side of the presbytery is entering an inspired new chapter as our team of six masons begins work on 12 new grotesques. Inspired by the early medieval riddles and poems of The Exeter Book, each mason has selected two unique verses to serve as the creative soul for their carvings. This milestone follows the Fabric Advisory Committee’s approval of the sketch models on 4 March, officially moving the project from concept to creation. “We are currently sculpting full-sized 1:1 clay models, which will be cast in plaster to serve as precise guides for the final stone carvings. These 12 grotesques will be distributed across three pinnacles at the East end – four per pinnacle. The most easterly of the pinnacles is being completely replaced and so is the bottom half of the pinnacle next to it. The third pinnacle has already been restored but will have four of the grotesques indented into it. These rare Anglo-Saxon texts are unique to Exeter Cathedral and it is an honour to portray them in stone on the building itself.” – Owen, Stonemason #ExeterCathedral #YourCathedral

We recently caught up with comedian, actor + ex-Exeter Cathedral Choral Scholar @LloydGriffith – “Being a Choral Scholar at Exeter Cathedral was one of the best things I ever did… …and 20 years on, I still miss it very dearly. It’s not just the incredible music making, but everything that comes with it. I love the peace that Evensong can bring to a very busy day – offering a moment of togetherness and calm, also providing structure to your university week and term. Not only are you part of one of the country's most prestigious Cathedral choirs, but a part of a beautiful community of supportive people and I’m very lucky that we’re all still very close, two decades on. I'm almost certain I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today had it not been for those four years in the choir at Exeter.” ––– Could you be one of our new Choral Scholars? Whether you’re studying at Exeter University or seeking a gap year experience, this is a unique opportunity that will help you on your career pathway.
