1,250 hours of stitching! 🧵👏 On Thursday 9 July, the Opus Anglicanum Team within the Exeter Cathedral Tapisers went to London's Guildhall to witness the unveiling of the ‘Circle of Life’ project. Over the course of a year, our team clocked up over 1,250 hours of stitching on the two panels that were allotted to us at Exeter Cathedral. We were one of the twelve Cathedrals who took part in this special endeavour. The Worshipful Company of Upholders decided to create a piece of Opus Anglicanum artwork to celebrate their 400th Anniversary of receiving a Royal Charter. The completion of this project was celebrated with a banquet in the Grand Hall of the Guildhall followed by the Unveiling of the finished embroidery: The Circle of Life. It is hoped that this will be displayed in Exeter Cathedral sometime over the next couple of years. On Tuesday 7 July, we were pleased to welcome The Very Revd Stephen Waine as Interim Dean and to witness him being licensed to Exeter Cathedral. The service was attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon and the Lord Mayor of Exeter, and the Right Revd Dr Mike Harrison, Bishop of Exeter, formally welcomed him to the Diocese and the Cathedral. Stephen brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Archdeacon of Dorset, the Dean of Chichester for eight years, and most recently as a parish priest in Dorset. As Interim Dean, Stephen will fulfil the roles of the Dean of Exeter while the process to find a permanent appointment is underway. The permanent appointment to the role of Dean of Exeter will be made by the Crown in due course. Please join us in offering a very warm welcome to Stephen and his family, including his wife, Lizzie, as they join the Exeter Cathedral community. A farewell Evensong was held at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 5 July to mark the upcoming retirement of the Dean, Jonathan Greener, who will officially step down from his role on 31 July. The service was attended by members of the public alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, the Lord Mayor of Exeter, the Bishop of Exeter and Exeter Cathedral's College of Canons. Music for the service was provided by Exeter Cathedral Choir. During Evensong, the Dean preached his final sermon. Short addresses of appreciation were given by Canon Jenny Ellis, the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon and the Rt Revd Dr Mike Harrison, Bishop of Exeter. To conclude the service, the Bishop presented the Dean with a farewell gift from the community and formally conferred upon Jonathan Greener the style and status of Dean Emeritus. Introducing our new Friday Library volunteer, Laura Takens. Laura has embarked on a project to add online catalogue records for our collection of medieval manuscript fragments. Before the invention of the printing press in the 15th century, books were copied by hand on parchment made from animal skin. When manuscripts fell out of use they were dismantled and individual leaves were recycled in the bindings of later books.
