Alright VR fam. We need to talk. Quest app sales are down 27% year over year. The FReality podcast just shut down. The visionaries of VR have all jumped ship, from @PalmerLuckey to @ID_AA_Carmack. What we're left with is @finkd and Meta, subsidizing the entire industry, throwing millions of dollars to AAA studios to make games that lose millions of dollars just to keep VR relevant. This is unsustainable over the long term and I'm worried that Meta will simply turn their back to VR as soon as AI/ AR Glasses/ begins to take off. Every other large company has bailed on consumer VR, from Apple to Google to Microsoft to Samsung, Nintendo and Valve. I'm hanging with my daughter tonight who has had access to VR her entire life, but is currently playing a Steam game. Much like everyone I know who has tried VR, she just lost interest, and no longer even asks about it. I love this medium more than I can explain in words. (Though I've tried here: x.com/Anticleric/sta… ). I've poured over a decade of my life into it, dreaming of the holodeck experience we all deserve. No other medium as offered so much, but I'm afraid for its future. Tell me why you think VR will succeed, and why it's not just about the friends we made along the way. As awesome as those friends are (truly, I love you all ❤️). I want my holodeck!!

Of course, Mark thinks that. The price and weight difference is enticing, an easier decision for the mainstream, especially young gamers—But when you really start using the device outside of games. Like watching movies, and being productive.. you know treating the device like a $300+ computer. The feelings quickly change. From displays, clunky and toy-like interface, multitasking, application update muting, audio mixer, forced social media hooks, forced mobile-app tie-in, no raw camera passthrough, subpar Dolby Audio, no HDR, no support for DTS sound, hand tracking requires to actually place your hands directly in front of you for it to track, no eye tracking , I can go on and on.. all Apple needs to do is just simply opt for lighter materials to reduce overall weight. And just keep everything relatively the same and really make a noteworthy impact. In contrast, Meta will have to continue investing and building on top of an operating system that they don’t own, while the company that leads the Android Open Source Project alongside Samsung, PICO, XREAL and rest of VR OEMs are working towards ensuring that Meta’s Android fork lacks any unique features. The walled garden for Meta’s Android fork “Horizon OS” will simply be VR software title exclusives that will end up flaming up a heavy software piracy, and device spoofing scene.

Mark Zuckerberg on the Joe Rogan podcast, said that Apple Vision Pro is worse than the Meta Quest: ‘They shipped something for $3,500 that I think is worse than the thing that we shipped for $300 or $400.’

@LachlanSleight @josethevrtech I agree. Better alternatives to Windows exist already, but it won’t be dethroned any time soon. It’s too embedded everywhere. It’s been the “year of the Linux” desktop for decades but that’s just a fantasy now. macOS is held back by the premium you pay for the hardware.

@josethevrtech I don't think there's enough of a market anymore for a real Windows competitor. :'( The only real advantage that Windows has over Linux/MacOS is cultural (more app/SDK/game support + more organisational inertia from huge corps). Any competitor would be even more niche than Linux.

Building an Operating System that can theoretically “Dethrone” Microsoft Windows.. My would guess you'd need something like ~10,000 engineers for about 5-6 years to build and test something the size of Windows 11 from scratch. About 75% of the engineers would have code as their primary deliverable. the average OS engineer makes ~$250,000 a year, and operational overhead for those engineers (office space, etc.) is another 50%, so $375k / engineer / yr. And that’s Just development labor.. the costs of establishing relationships to guarantee adoption and components, drivers support… retail relationships, distribution, marketing, etc …

Conclusions continued: -If you are a content creator or independent artist, you can create content at a nominal price. - Using these tools is still faster than doing the same things from scratch. - There is still a place for flesh-and-blood artists.

Conclusions: -Making stuff from these tools takes time. You can't just write a prompt & get a fully-realized song or video. -Some of the stuff is good and some really bad. -Can't replace real artists. These tools are not "there" yet. Close, but not there.

I know AI is controversial. I’m in tech, so I’ve been toying around with it. I made a music video, using Udio and Sora, inspired by Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk. I am sharing what I have learned in this thread. 🧵 youtube.com/watch?v=bduPwX…

What I learned using Sora: - Physics? What’s that? - Trying to get specific looking characters on the same clip was impossible. - Character consistency was impossible, but could get “close enough”. - It’s an impressive tool but not good enough for professional work.
