New explosive allegations from the Channel migrant crisis: The French are showing migrants “where to go” if they veer off course whilst crossing the Channel. Rescue vessels are pulling up alongside dinghies and waiting as asylum seekers refuel them, witnesses have claimed. And if they start going in the “wrong direction”, the officers will divert them back towards UK waters. The staggering admissions will prompt renewed criticism of Labour’s new migrant pact with France. A male migrant said: “We were much more safe because the French were looking after us.” Another said: “Those people who drive the boat, when they went in the wrong direction, the French told us, go that way. They gave us a way to go.” A female migrant said the French coastguard had stopped to provide fuel to the dinghy she was in and also corrected their course to the UK. “When they stopped the boat to give petrol [sic], they stopped with us. They stopped and were waiting for us." “When the boat moved, they moved with us. “They showed the way, where to go, where to move.”

New: Shabana Mahmood is not going to resign, sources claim. The Home Secretary told Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to set out a timetable to step down on Monday. This led to claims she will step down, as the PM clings on. But an aide said: "She is cracking on with the job.”

NEW: Cabinet sources say Keir Starmer refused to see cabinet ministers individually after the meeting despite telling them to come to him one-on-one if they wanted to talk about his position Several ministers including Wes Streeting took a long time to leave No10 afterwards
Alex Wickham@alexwickham

It seems what happened at cabinet is Keir Starmer sought to hold off a rebellion there and then Cabinet sources say he indicated he didn’t want to have a big discussion about his position in that meeting, and that if they wanted to talk about it they should see him individually

This really shouldn't be missed. Justice Secretary David Lammy had an extraordinary row with Labour MP Charlotte Nichols over his plan to axe half of jury trials. Ms Nichols said: “They (the Government) were trying to pitch it as criminals and legal professionals kicking off, and we are standing up for victims. “They kept really hammering this line. “On one occasion, I got into a row with David Lammy because I don’t think the proposals are workable. “He said ‘tell that to the rape victims waiting three years in court’. “I’ve been that rape victim. I know what that feels like.” H/t @kirkkorner
