In the Middle of War, a Massive Christ the Redeemer Statue Rises on Lebanon’s Border No matter what challenges Lebanon faces, the country keeps its eyes on Jesus! Lebanon is building one of the biggest statues of Christ the Redeemer in the Middle East — and the amazing video of its installation is inspiring Christians all over the world! The massive statue now stands on Jabal al-Salib (“Mount of the Cross”), overlooking the Bekaa plain from the Christian border town of El Qaa, near Syria. The breathtaking images have quickly gone viral, becoming a moving symbol of faith, endurance, and hope for a community long tested by suffering. Known for their deep faith and love for their homeland, the people of El Qaa see this project as an act of gratitude to God for His constant protection and blessings — many of which they attribute to the intercession of Saint Elias, Saint George and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although the finishing date for the wider site and church remains uncertain, many see the timing of the statue’s installation as providential. “It was never meant to carry such a message,” Mattar said, “but today it naturally stands as a sign of hope — reminding all Lebanese that faith endures, that light overcomes darkness, and that God’s protection still surrounds us.” The project was first planned in August 2025 and began a month later, led by Mattar and made possible through the generosity of its main benefactor, Fadi Elias Awad. Let’s keep praying for our brothers and sisters in the Middle East and all regions affected by war.

Pope Leo XIV at Sunday’s Angelus urged those responsible for the escalating war in the Middle East to declare a ceasefire and reopen paths of dialogue, while expressing concern over the situation in Lebanon. “For two weeks now, the peoples of the Middle East have been suffering the horrific violence of war. Thousands of innocent people have been killed, and countless others have been forced to flee their homes,” the pope said after praying the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square. Calling the situation in Lebanon “a cause for great concern,” he added: “I hope that avenues for dialogue will emerge to support the country’s Authorities in implementing lasting solutions to the serious crisis currently unfolding, for the common good of all the Lebanese people.” “On behalf of the Christians of the Middle East, and of all women and men of good will, I appeal to those responsible for this conflict: cease fire! May paths of dialogue be reopened!”

Christians in the Middle East seek to live their faith & serve their societies industriously with peace & care. The greatest danger to our survival is the loss of hope due to persecution & constant wars that ruin economies, jobs & security forcing families into the diaspora.

We pray for peace in the Middle East. Jesus teaches us : “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” May we seek peace with courage & compassion, remembering every human life carries sacred worth. We are called to care for one another w/out exception.
