Greetings. I am Eyo Starra, a luthier dedicated to the handcrafting of fine violins. On this page, I share the step-by-step progress of each instrument: from initial shaping and purfling to the meticulous assembly that brings these instruments to life. Thank you for following the journey of traditional craftsmanship. Updates on current projects will be posted regularly. #Luthier #HandcraftedViolins #ViolinMaking

@mag_crow4593 I have been making it, and it always amazes me also! I like to think that the instrument has always been in there, and I am just bringing it out.

I am amazed often about the ability for a person to gather and then form raw materials into something useful and fine. Who would believe that a violin is made of a bit of spruce, a bit of maple and a bit of ebony? The key ingredient is the hand of the Craftsman, their attention to details. Skills.

Beginning to cut the neck mortice. These measurements are so important! The neck angle is crucial to playability, and the seat (how well the neck is sitting in the instrument) is vital to the strength of the instrument. This is very time consuming and progress is slow, when finished the unglued neck should seat into the neck, and be able to be put under pressure of strings without glue, though the neck is still glued in during the final process.

@mag_crow4593 I found this that was part of their add campaign in 1958. It seems to be readable. You can also find recordings online if you want hear it.

@Old_But_Gold50s Stunning, and she memorized it as well. Challenging piece, and she must have put in a very long time to accomplish it at this level.

@mag_crow4593 A varnish box is definitely on the list, and soon! I’d like one large enough to fit 2 violas, and I have a few ideas, but does anyone else have ideas for a varnish drying box?

@EyoStarra need to build you a varnish box. Hmmm. One big enough for 2 violas in size? You work too much for a sing I'm thinking. Or cure one at a time? Querious minds want to know?

Absolutely, the reason that instruments are made with hot hide glue is so that they can be taken apart and reassembled for repair. Hide glue is extremely useful, because it dissolves in water and alcohol, and breaks when shocked, it is what prevents your instrument from cracking when dropped (most of the time).

My scroll is shaping up, and the neck is coming out. Next steps, gluing on the fingerboard, and purfling! Gluing on the finger board at this stage helps to measure the neck angle when I start to cut the mortise, and allows me to make proper measurements for the shaping of the neck.

Finger board is tack gluing to the neck, the bending iron is hot, and the purfling is being carefully bent into place. All of the purfling must be perfectly bent and cut before they are glued in.

@mag_crow4593 The fingerboard is tack gluing on now. It will be removed after the neck is installed so that the varnish can be applied.

@mag_crow4593 It definitely can be if you are not careful! Chisels and gouges should always be used in a direction that is clear of any of your body parts and digits.

@EyoStarra Coming along very well! I would be afraid of very sharp chisels so close to my hands. A recipe for stitches.

Hard at work this morning, coffee in hand, fluting the scroll. It always surprises me how something as small as removing a mm or so of wood can make such a huge difference.
