Vic Elford died #OnThisDay 4 years ago, aged 86, one of racing’s all-time unsung heroes, a man who mastered the mighty Porsche 917 like almost no-one else & said of his first Le Mans outing in it, “I could go through the Mulsanne kink at 250mph [402km/h].” Pic by Bernard Cahier.

Mauro Forghieri, the great Ferrari engineer, was born on this day 90 years ago. A brilliant and lovely man, he passed away three years ago.
I took this photo at the Nürburgring in 1968.

One of the unsung heroes, Hans Herrmann left us today at the grand age of 97. He will remain as the first driver to win Le Mans for Porsche in 1970, driving the daunting 917K with teammate Richard Attwood. Brave men!
