The average lifespan of a newly recruited Russian soldier after arriving on the battlefield in Ukraine is reportedly around 30 minutes. At the same time, due to the extensive damage Ukrainian drones have inflicted on refineries deep inside Russian territory, Russia has begun importing refined petroleum products - primarily gasoline - from India. I’m not sharing these facts as a news report, but as food for thought for those wondering why the next war will be about spoils of war, at least from Russia’s perspective. The radical Islamic axis that will join Russia - Turkey, Iran, Libya, and Sudan - will do so for its own ideological and religious reasons. But Russia’s motivation appears to be different. It needs energy, and Israel has discovered vast natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean. Tehran is facing a perfect storm. Long before the war, the city was already sinking by up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) every year because decades of reckless groundwater extraction permanently collapsed the aquifers beneath it. Extensive urbanization and concrete development have prevented rainwater from naturally recharging those underground reservoirs, leaving the ground unstable and causing roads, buildings, metro stations, and critical infrastructure to crack and deform. Now add months of war. Thousands of buildings have been damaged or destroyed, fuel depots and industrial facilities have been hit, key military and government infrastructure has been targeted, and entire neighborhoods have suffered extensive destruction. The capital now faces the enormous challenge of rebuilding on land that is literally sinking beneath it. Reconstructing a modern city is difficult under the best of circumstances. Reconstructing one whose foundations are collapsing is another matter entirely. Every new building, road, bridge, pipeline, and rail line must contend not only with war damage but also with ongoing ground subsidence that continues year after year. Tehran’s greatest long-term threat may not be what fell from the sky - it may be what is disappearing beneath the ground. Unless Iran fundamentally reforms its water management, every reconstruction project will be built on increasingly unstable foundations.

The Firefly guided air-dropped munition has completed testing and is ready for mass production, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense announced. The munition is designed to strike fortifications, dugouts, and other protected enemy positions while allowing the drone carrying it to remain at a safe distance. It can be deployed from altitudes of up to 800 meters. After release, the munition independently calculates and adjusts its flight path to the target, maintaining accuracy even under enemy electronic warfare. According to the ministry, Firefly has been tested on Ukraine’s primary heavy bomber drones, and the Ministry of Defense is now ready to transfer the technology to private manufacturers for production.

The European Union has reached a “dead end” in negotiations over a new package of sanctions against Russia, Bloomberg reports. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the EU is considering three possible scenarios to break the impasse over its latest sanctions package. Talks on the 21st package slowed last week after Greece continued to oppose proposals that would restrict European companies from transferring Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to third countries.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with the United Kingdom’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham. “I truly appreciate that support for Ukraine and our people will remain strong. Thank you for your warm words of respect for the Ukrainian people and for your condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed in the recent Russian attacks. Ukraine and the United Kingdom have built the strongest partnership in the history of relations between our two countries, and we will continue working to make it even stronger,” Zelenskyy said. The two leaders agreed to discuss further cooperation, including work within the Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition, during an in-person meeting in the near future.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she had a “very fruitful” phone call with Serhii Koretskyi and that they would continue working closely on reforms supporting Ukraine’s path toward EU membership. “Our drone agreement will allow the EU’s industrial capacity to rapidly and at scale produce the most innovative defense equipment for Ukraine. We also discussed preparations for winter and the protection of critical energy infrastructure. You can count on our full support, including in your efforts to improve governance in the energy sector,” von der Leyen wrote on X.

Russian forces attacked Odesa, killing three people and injuring six others. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the strike caused a large fire at a private enterprise that manufactures household appliances. A gas pipeline was also damaged. Emergency crews have extinguished the fire.

With Russia unable to secure victory in its war against Ukraine, the Kremlin is looking for an alternative win and now regards the Baltic region and Poland as its most likely next target, said Lithuania's Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas.  "Since the war in Ukraine is not unfolding as Russia planned, they are unable to win, and today explosions are echoing within Russia itself, there are fuel shortages [...] Russian society is already questioning the Kremlin regime about why this is happening and where the promised victory is," Kaunas told LRT on Monday.

Ukraine has endured the deadliest month of Russian attacks on civilians since April 2022, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said, citing official data from the latest report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. ▫️293 civilians were killed and 1,990 were injured, the highest monthly civilian casualty toll since April 2022. ▫️That is 10% more than in May and 37% more than in June 2025. ▫️Since the beginning of 2026, Russia has killed 1,396 Ukrainian civilians and injured 7,978 others. “Each new month becomes more deadly. When people die every day in their own homes, falling asleep and never waking up, when Russian missiles kill entire families, this is the clearest proof that Russia does not want—and has never wanted—peace. Its true intentions are written in the blood of civilians, in UN reports, and in the ruins of Ukrainian cities. Russia must not be persuaded—it must be deprived of the ability to kill,” Lubinets said.
