The Aris Velouchiotis flag seen in the Omonoia 29M stands. Velouchiotis was the military leader of ELAS (Greek People's Liberation Army), the largest resistance force in Greece during World War II. He is one of the most iconic figures of the struggle against the nazi occupation. He transformed a struggle that began with a small group of guerrillas in the mountains into a disciplined people's army numbering tens of thousands. Thanks to his strategic genius, he turned the Greek mountains into hell for the German occupiers. Although his real name was Athanasios Klaras, he took the name “Aris Velouchiotis” by combining the ancient Greek war god Ares (Aris) and the name Velouchi, a famous bandit of the Middle Ages. After the nazis withdrew, a civil war atmosphere emerged in Greece. The British-backed right-wing government and communist forces confronted each other. When ELAS was ordered to lay down its arms with the Varkiza Agreement in 1945, Velouchiotis rejected this “surrender.” Although he was ostracized by the Communist Party of Greece, he continued fighting in the mountains. When he was surrounded, it is accepted that he committed suicide with a hand grenade so as not to fall into enemy hands. After his death, his head was cut off and displayed in the city square of Trikala. This made him a historical figure for Greek and Cypriot anti-fascists.
