He became a father just before the Australian Open, so his preparation wasn’t ideal, and he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked. This tournament is usually his first event post-Australia, and historically, he has started slow here—losing the first set in 3 of his last 4 opening matches, despite being a clear favorite (1.15 in 2023, 1.10 in 2021, 1.18 in 2020), and once again he is priced very short on Monday despite the trend. Stan Wawrinka is likely nearing retirement, but he’s still capable of showing glimpses of his former self (Stockholm in October). At 39, he isn’t producing high-level tennis consistently, but in an event where he has good memories, against a top opponent, and in front of an energetic crowd, he could fire up and deliver some vintage tennis—most likely in the opening set when his legs are still fresh. Most importantly, Stan has the power needed to hit through Medvedev.

He wasn’t convinced by the move to Saudi until he was benched this past Sunday against Cagliari. He then decided to accept the offer yesterday. - He already bid farewell to his teammates this morning. The likes of Bove, Paredes and Soulé. 👋 - When he left Trigoria this morning, he took his boots with him and didn’t partake in a photo shoot for the league because at this point he was certain he was leaving. - Then in the afternoon, he further reflected on the move with his family and agent. - After the love he received from the fans and his companions, he decided he wants to stay in Rome. ❤️‍🔥 - His wife and mother were never fully convinced about a move to Saudi. 🇸🇦❌ - After changing his mind, he then decided he wanted to announce his decision to stay with an Instagram post at 7pm. 📱🟡🔴 via @DiMarzio
