🌊 #WASOP: One ocean, one future: West Africa leads the blue wave! Funded by the European Union with a total budget of €59 million #teamEurope #GlobalGateway, WASOP runs for five years. It aims at promoting integrated and sustainable management of marine and coastal resources in West Africa, while supporting inclusive and competitive economic growth. #OceanGovernance #BlueEconomy #MarineConservation The program was officially launched during the 8th edition of Ocean Week, organized by the Cape Verdean government. 56% of ECOWAS GDP depends on ocean-linked sectors, while nearly 40% of fish stocks are already overexploited or depleted. Coastal erosion in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Togo is advancing at an average of 1.8 meters per year, costing up to $3.8 billion annually. These alarming figures underscore the need for coordinated action to preserve marine ecosystems, sustain livelihoods, and catalyse inclusive economic growth. WASOP addresses urgent regional challenges —from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing to coastal erosion, marine pollution and underfinancing— by strengthening coordination, promoting sustainable investments, and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems. WASOP is based on three coordinated pillars of action: 1️⃣Ocean governance: “We need to improve the legal framework to combat illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing,” says Kallahi Brahim, Permanent Secretary of the SRFC. “To combat IUU fishing, we need to strengthen governance, technological surveillance capabilities, and involve local communities,” adds Gaston Djihinto, Secretary General of the FCWC. 2️⃣Sustainable blue economy: “WASOP aims to support this maritime culture, which is central to West Africa's economic development, and to activate the right levers in the private sector,” says Jérémie Pellet, CEO of Expertise France. 3️⃣Protection of ecosystems: WASOP will contribute to the financing of marine protected areas. “Calls for projects are not an expense, they are an investment in the future. They are the best tool we have to protect 30% of marine and terrestrial ecosystems by 2030, a figure that currently stands at less than 3% worldwide,” explains Alberto Quieruga, Oceano Azul Foundation.

30 October 2025 - The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), in collaboration with the Marine and Coastal Observation for West and North Africa (MarCNoWA) project, are holding a Capacity-Building Training on the Use of the MarCNoWA Web Portal for Enhanced Fisheries Monitoring at the Onomo Hotel in Lomé, Togo, from 30–31 October 2025. The capacity-building training workshop is being organised to equip fisheries monitoring personnel with the technical skills to use the MarCNoWA Web Portal for real-time vessel tracking, oil spill detection, and marine environmental monitoring. The training’s participants include fisheries officers from the fisheries monitoring and control centres of all six FCWC Member States, and personnel from the FCWC Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Centre (RMCSC). The key outcomes of the training are enhanced regional capacity to detect IUU fishing and marine pollution, the integration of earth observation data into fisheries surveillance workflows, and greater harmonisation of monitoring tools across the region.

20 October 2025 - The FCWC began its National Workshop for the Restitution and Validation of Institutional and Legal Framework Analysis and Stakeholder Mapping for Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) for Ghana today at the Hephzibah Christian Centre in Aburi, Ghana. The three-day workshop is being held from 20-22 October 2025 to validate the results of institutional and legal framework analysis and stakeholder identification conducted by the MarEcoPlan project’s national consultant. The workshop’s participants include representatives from FCWC, IUCN, Ghanaian government ministries and agencies, local assemblies, universities, the private sector, development partners, and non-governmental organisations. One key outcome of the workshop is a validated report on legal and institutional frameworks. ----- 20 octobre 2025 - Le CPCO a lancé aujourd'hui son atelier national consacré à la restitution et à la validation de l'analyse du cadre institutionnel et juridique et à la cartographie des parties prenantes pour la Planification de Spatial Marin (PSM) au Ghana, au Hephzibah Christian Centre à Aburi, au Ghana. Cet atelier de trois jours, qui se tient du 20 au 22 octobre 2025, a pour objectif de valider les résultats de l'analyse du cadre institutionnel et juridique et de l'identification des parties prenantes menées par le consultant national du projet MarEcoPlan. Parmi les participants à l'atelier figurent des représentants du CPCO, des ministères et agences gouvernementaux ghanéens, des assemblées locales, des universités, du secteur privé, des partenaires de développement et des organisations non gouvernementales. L'un des principaux résultats de l'atelier est un rapport validé sur les cadres juridiques et institutionnels.

10 October 2025 - The FCWC and its partner TMT in the West Africa Task Force (WATF), in collaboration with the ‘Fisheries Governance in Senegal ‘ project and under the auspices of the Cote d’Ivoire Ministry of Animal Resources (MIRAH), organised an exchange visit between fishery officers of Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire from 6–8 October 2025 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with financial support from Oceans 5 and Norad. The exchange and training visit was organised to promote the sharing of best practices in Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS), and to strengthen port inspection procedures and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The participants in the visit included fisheries inspectors, FMC operators, and the Directors of Fisheries MCS from Senegal. The key outcomes of the exchange visit are increased alignment of MCS practices, enhanced knowledge of port inspection techniques, identification of replicable processes and methods, and strengthened bilateral collaboration on suspicious vessel activity. 15 October 2025 - The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) participated in the Final Planning Conference (FPC) from 13 to 15 October 2025, in Accra, Ghana, for the Grand African NEMO (GANO) Exercise, a French-sponsored multinational maritime security drill, directed by the French Maritime Prefect and Commander of the Atlantic (CECLANT). The three-day conference was held to finalise plans for the Grand African NEMO (GANO) 2025 scheduled for 10 to 17 November 2025. The conference convened representatives from the ECOWAS Interregional Coordination Centre (ICC), the ECOWAS Regional Centres for Maritime Security (CRESMs), the Multinational Maritime Coordination Centres (MMCCs), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), regional fisheries bodies, delegations from the navies, coast guards, maritime adminstrations and State Action at Sea organizations from countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea, to confirm the readiness of all participants for the upcoming exercise. 2 October 2025 - The European Union, Ghana’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Secretariat of the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), jointly launched the West Africa Sustainable Ocean Programme (WASOP) to enhance the sustainable and integrated use of ocean resources in West Africa. Happy 65th Independence Day, Nigeria! On this 1 October 2025, the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) joins the people of Nigeria in celebrating 65 years of independence, progress, and resilience. This year’s commemoration carries added significance as Nigeria prepares to host the 16th Session of the FCWC Conference of Ministers in Lagos — a vital gathering to strengthen regional fisheries governance, cooperation, and sustainability. We salute Nigeria’s role in our regional cooperation and look forward to a successful Conference of Ministers. ------ En ce 1er octobre 2025, le Comité de Pêches du Centre-Ouest du Golfe de Guinée (CPCO) se joint au peuple du Nigéria pour célébrer 65 années d’indépendance, de progrès et de résilience. The FCWC participated in the 3rd Steering Committee Meeting / Final Workshop to Finalize the Project Document for the Implementation of the Regional Aquaculture Development Programme in West Africa (RADP-WA) organised by the ECOWAS Commission, with support from the United Nations Organisation for Food and Agriculture (FAO), and in collaboration with the Subregional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) on 25–26 September 2025 at Abuja, Nigeria. The Steering Committee Meeting / Final Workshop was organised to finalise and validate the draft Project Document for RADP-WA and explore resource mobilisation opportunities for its implementation. 25 septembre 2025 - Le Comité des Pêches du Centre-Ouest du Golfe de Guinée (CPCO) a participé à la table ronde des donateurs visant à renforcer la coordination régionale pour lutter contre la pêche INN en Afrique de l'Ouest, qui s'est tenue les 23 et 24 septembre 2025 à Abuja, au Nigeria. Cette table ronde avait pour objectif de rechercher les fonds nécessaires à la mise en œuvre du Cadre stratégique régional et du Plan d'action pour lutter contre la pêche illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée en Afrique de l'Ouest (RSFAP). Le RSFAP vise à renforcer la croissance économique équitable, la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition en contribuant à la gestion durable des ressources marines grâce à l'élimination de la pêche INN dans les États membres de la CEDEAO et en Mauritanie. The roundtable was organised to seek the necessary funding needed to implement the Regional Strategic Framework and Action Plan to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing in West Africa (RSFAP). The RSFAP aims to strengthen equitable economic growth and food security and nutrition by contributing to the sustainable management of marine resources through the elimination of IUU fishing in ECOWAS member States and Mauritania.
