FDG 2023 Conference

Yesterday I presented our research "Impact of BCI-Informed Visual Effect Adaptation in Walking Simulator" at #FDG2023 on behalf of my co-authors @gillianmsmith and @erinsolovey. We explored using BCI as supplementary control to affect visual effects in a video game.

Yesterday I had the privilege of presenting our paper "V-Light: Leveraging Edge Computing For The Design of Mobile Augmented Reality Games" on behalf of an amazing team of collaborators, including my advisors @eharpstead & @kleenestar, at #FDG2023

We played a bit around with #gamification for #QuantumComputing. The result: A beta version of a Rogue-like game teaching quantum computing. This week, Michael Artner presented the concept at @FDGconf. Wanna play a round? Then, check it out at cda.cit.tum.de/app/qrogue.

Today we present our paper "Not Tekken Seriously? How Observers Respond to Masculine and Feminine Voices in Videogame Streamers" at #FDG2023 . We explore gender-based perceptions in gaming and we are so happy to have received a best paper award!

*Very* interesting talk about playable quotes presented by @jf at @FDGconf - especially in terms of games preservation, as demonstrated by this slide. Also absolutely love the analogy of playable quotes as erasure poetry!

So excited to see @pyrofoux present their ground-breaking work on Kolmogorov complexity and procedural generation at @FDGconf! Really interesting point about how the scale of PCG isn't always obvious to players, for example with island generation in Animal Crossing.

Lots of things happening at @FDGconf but I want to highlight the excellent keynote by @nielsen_holly discussing tabletop games (focusing on the UK context), their politics & more. I highlight 1 slide, emphasizing the "remember, it's just a game..." in this designer's description.

Fascinating (and unfortunately not so surprising) findings presented by @susannepoeller @reganmandryk et al: in a male-dominated genre, a player's personality is judged less positively if presented with a feminine voice. @FDGconf

Really nice approach here - Laura did not ask for information about participants and instead let them describe themselves and see what they brought up. I love this.

In a very cool talk that tried to study body appreciation and self-image by watching how people alter avatars in character creation.
