The Western Balkan countries must join the EU as soon as possible because if a political vacuum arises in this region, authoritarian regimes will step in.

Montenegro is at a crossroads and has the opportunity to quickly join the European Union. The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the German Bundestag, Michael Roth, assessed that the geopolitical arguments are crystal clear.

Always a pleasure to meet with progressive partners and exchange views on the most pressing issues. Today we welcomed a delegation of NGO representatives from #Montenegro who were interested in knowing more about the state of affairs in the #EU and what are the current debates about. We spoke about just transition, rural development and local communities, the impact of the far-right on the EU #climateagenda and enlargement process, and the involvement of youth and women in the climate change debate. A special emphasis has been placed by the delegation on the ongoing negotiations with the EU on Chapter 27: #Environment and #climatechange. Here we have identified a particular interest in sharing views on how Montenegro can best align its policies with EU provisions. Certain progress has been made, but there is more work to be done in this direction. This is why facilitating a progressive dialogue is so important for accelerating the climate agenda in Montenegro in this case. @FESnewsbrief
