A nationwide cohort study in England involving over 164,000 older adults found that 4.6% of patients required at least one reoperation within one year of hip fracture surgery. /0301-620X.108B5.BJJ-2025-1414

Infections were the leading cause of reoperations within the first 30 days, while periprosthetic fractures were more common after 30 days. Reoperation rates also varied significantly between hospitals.

Hip fractures are a major issue in older adults, and while opioids are commonly used for short-term pain after surgery, many patients continue using them long after recovery, raising risks of falls, complications, and mortality.

The model performed well in distinguishing higher- and lower-risk patients, particularly in safely identifying those unlikely to develop long-term opioid use.

Researchers identified 8 simple, routinely available discharge factors, including age, mobility, fracture type, marital status, prior non-opioid pain medication use, anticoagulant use, surgical delay, and length of stay, that help predict risk.

In a study of 26,057 patients aged ≥65, 31.1% developed long-term opioid therapy within one year.

A recent prospective cohort study evaluated whether visual health education (VHE) could improve perioperative care for 96 older adults undergoing percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) for osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs).

• Postoperative rehabilitation and osteoporosis treatment The findings suggest that disease-specific visual education improved patient experience, perioperative outcomes, and long-term self-management.

While the control group received standard verbal education, the intervention group also received four animated videos covering: • OVF prevention and disease education • The PKP procedure • Intraoperative positioning and precautions
