New Zealand: A large wildfire has broken out on Bridge Hill in Canterbury, New Zealand. 9 helicopters, 3 fixed wing aircraft, and a large ground force has been dispatched. Three camps occupied by school children has been evacuated. At last report, the fire was still out of control and not contained. There were also multiple fires today in Central and coastal Otago. Thanks to the subscriber who sent in these views of the fire.

FONTANA (FINAL): #CanyonCrest IC has been assumed by @CALFIRERRU. Fire is currently mapped at 85 acres with 0% containment. EVACUATION WARNINGS remain in effect. A Care & Reception Center has been set up at Jurupa Valley High School. Crews will continue to work through the night. Fire cause is still undetermined and under investigation. Australia: Multiple brush fires have broken out across Australia prompting evacuations in communities outside Perth. #wildfire Authorities have said if residents have not yet evacuated due to the Wedge Island fire, then it is too late, and they should find a place to shelter in town. Two firefighters have been injured today fighting that fire and sustained burns. One is in hospital but in stable condition. That fire is nearing 100,000 acres. Another fire in Perth, near Champion Lakes, led to the arrest of two 14 boys who have been charged with “willfully lighting a bushfire.” During that operation water bombers working the fire had to be shut down due to a civilian drone flying over the fire. Australia’s Fire season is underway.

Shortly after my episode came out on the USC retardant study, one of the companies included in the study, Perimeter Solutions, reached out and provided the following statement: #wildfire #aviation “Researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) released a report on the use of PHOS-CHEK@® fire retardant. PHOS-CHEK is an advanced fire safety solution that has been used by the US Forest Service, CAL FIRE, and other fire management organizations for more than 60 years, playing a critical role in protecting property and saving countless lives from the devastation of wildfires. The PHOS-CHEK product that was tested for the USC study, PHOS-CHEK® LC95W, has never been used in aerial applications, and has not been procured by the federal government for a number of years. All PHOS-CHEK fire retardants used in aerial firefighting must be fully qualified by the USDA Forest Service. All fully qualified fire retardants must pass extensive testing to confirm they meet strict standards for aquatic and mammalian safety. The USDA Forest Service also issued two comprehensive Environmental Impact Statements in 2011 and 2024, both after lengthy comment periods. Each included signed Records of Decision concluding that aerially applied PHOS-CHEK products have been approved as safe for use. The active ingredient in all PHOS-CHEK fire retardants is the same material used in agriculture to produce food. The amount used for retardant is less than 0.01% of what's used for retardant is less than 0.01% of what's used in agricultural and other applications.”
