Back in late 2017, in eastern Poland, a reddish-brown cow walked out of her farm one night and into the Białowieża Forest. It’s an ancient stretch of woodland on the border with Belarus, home to wolves and around 600 wild European bison. Everyone assumed she’d come back when the cold set in, or be picked off by predators. Months later, a birdwatcher named Adam Zbyryt was on a routine outing in the forest when he noticed something off in a herd of about 50 bison. One of the animals was the wrong colour. He looked through his binoculars. It was the cow. She’d joined the herd. She was eating what they ate, moving when they moved, and looked perfectly healthy. The bison expert who later confirmed the sighting put it simply: “With the bison, it’s safe from wolves.” Conservationists eventually agreed she’d have to be returned to a farm before mating season. A bison-cow hybrid calf would be too large for her to deliver safely, and would risk diluting the gene pool of an already endangered species.

A Canadian musician named Dave Carroll was on a flight from Halifax to Omaha, USA in 2008 when a passenger behind him looked out the window during a stopover and said, “Oh my God, they’re throwing guitars out there.” Carroll arrived at his destination to find his $3,500 Taylor acoustic, an instrument he’d saved for months to buy, smashed with a hole through the body. So he wrote a country song called “United Breaks Guitars,” shot a music video on a $150 budget, and put it on YouTube. It hit 150,000 views in a day, 5 million in a month, and now sits at around 30 million. Within four weeks of the upload, the Times of London was reporting that United’s stock had dropped 10%, costing shareholders around $180 million. The airline phoned to apologise. The CEO of Taylor Guitars phoned to give him two free guitars. United later asked if they could use the video to train their own customer service staff. Then, one trip later, they lost his luggage.
