One of my graduate students dropped by, struggling a bit with the reviews of their first journal paper. This is what I shared with them to help put them in a better headspace: 1. Peer reviewers are volunteers. 2. Map all comments to actions. 3. Address all comments. 4. Focus on improving your paper, instead of arguing. 5. Rarely, and only with strong defense, say no. 6. Don’t take things personally. 7. Avoid recreational revisions.

Episode 31 of the ongoing Kīlauea summit eruption just started today, August 22, at 2:04 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time. Spattering within the north vent was visible overnight, along with several sluggish overflows. The summit region switched from inflationary deformation to deflation with the start of the fountaining. So far, eruptive activity has been localized to the north vent only during this episode. During episode 30, both the north and south vents erupted, as well as a new fissure in the south caldera wall. Watch along as episode 31 unfolds on the three USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s livestream cameras: V1cam: url.usgs.gov/v1cam V2cam: url.usgs.gov/v2cam V3cam: url.usgs.gov/v3cam Please see the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park website for visitor information: nps.gov/havo/index.htm.

Lava from the 9th in the current series of eruptions at Sundhnúkur, #Iceland, emitted on July 16. At a little more than a week old, this is some of the youngest rock on planet Earth 🌋🌋🌋

On this day last year, the 5th eruption of the Sundhnúkur crater system. This one featured quite a bit of ash when the magma hit ground water. I remember seeing how quickly it was lengthening, it was scarily beautiful #Iceland #Sundhnúkur #Reykjanes #Volcano #OTD

Episode 28 of the ongoing Kīlauea summit eruption is over after 9 hours of continuous lava fountaining. The south vent did not appear to activate at all during this episode and has been completely covered by new deposits. Lava fountains reached approximately 1200 ft (365 m).
