It was a moment of unscripted, unexpected, and completely unenjoyable. shock, and not the good kind. That is why, in the eyes of English fans at least, it has to be considered one of the World Cup's most iconic moments. The miss allowed France to reach the final, where they would play an all-timer with Lionel Messi's Argentina, and it prevented Kane from writing himself into England history (which he would eventually) and potentially from rewriting the recent history of English football.
