On May 14, I’ll be in Lisbon for the FR⚡EE Energy Summit, organized by FREE Madeira Org. The title of my talk: The 150 TWh Ghost : How France could turn hidden low-carbon electricity into Bitcoin security The idea is simple, but still widely misunderstood in Europe. We talk a lot about electricity production: nuclear, renewables, grids, energy sovereignty, decarbonization. But we talk far too little about the shape of demand. In a power system that is increasingly low-carbon, renewable-heavy, nuclear-backed, interconnected and sometimes locally congested, the question is no longer only: “How do we produce more?” It is also: “Who can consume at the right place, at the right time, at the right price — and disappear from the grid within seconds when needed?” This is where Bitcoin mining becomes a unique energy object. Not because it is “the best use” of electricity. Quite the opposite. Every higher-value use should come first: industry, heat, batteries, hydrogen, AI data centers, electrification of transport, and so on. But when none of these uses are available, when electricity is surplus, stranded, constrained or economically wasted, Bitcoin mining can become the buyer of last resort. It creates a floor price. It turns otherwise wasted energy into global monetary security. And most importantly: it can switch off almost instantly. That property changes everything. A factory wants stability. An AI data center wants uptime. A conventional industrial load hates interruption. Bitcoin mining is different: it is energy-intensive, price-sensitive and interruptible. That is exactly the kind of demand European grids will need to understand if we want to accelerate decarbonization without multiplying hidden costs, congestion, negative prices and curtailment. In Lisbon, I’ll present the French case: a massively low-carbon electricity system, a nuclear fleet that is underused part of the time, increasingly distorted price signals, and a “ghost” potential measured in tens — possibly hundreds — of TWh. But the real issue goes beyond France. Europe is not doomed to remain outside the global hashrate map. It is mostly trapped in regulatory and tariff categories that still treat ultra-flexible loads as if they were permanent loads. That is exactly the work we are doing at the Institut National de Bitcoin (@BitcoinPolicyFr): documenting the facts, identifying the barriers, producing serious analysis, and proposing a neutral framework so that flexible loads can finally play their role in European power systems.
