@nitwitschool very well could’ve been. in that scenario, when trading fox later they would’ve got similar value of a hanifin type back. probably wouldn’t have even made that type of deal w carolina at all in the first place. so it’s a complete unknown hard to even speculate what would’ve been
why do flames fans turn into such lames as soon as possible when the flames win a couple games in a row. it’s like clockwork. you can’t suck for more than 5 minutes without people itching to pull out the same old culture bullshit tweets.
@nitwitschool most teams decisions look good when compared to whatever the hell vancouver and edmonton mgmt are doing haha. how edmonton doesn’t already have multiple cups lucking into mcdavid & drai is the equivalent of a hockey war crime lol
@FSN2NASTY But on the other hand, Gaudreau basically emerged like a top 5 pick. Tkachuk would've gone 2nd in a 2016 redraft. So there were some things in there that worked out. Imagine they had taken Nurse & Virtanen over Monahan/Bennett. We'd be in like year 14 of our 'rebuild.'
@nitwitschool yeah just to make it clear my problem w the downfall of the 2010’s flames wasn’t that they never drafted 1st overall, i think just a couple more yrs of more top 5-10 picks and less moral victories / fun comeback kid moments woulda been way more beneficial long term
@FSN2NASTY Difficult debate to have with a character limit. I just think even with the best strategy in the world, lucking into 1st overall is just that - luck. I don't necessarily fault them for not doing it. Would it have made things significantly easier? Absolutely.
@nitwitschool we’re gonna have to leave this convo here lol. i could go all day and i’d push back on some of what you’d said since i don’t totally agree but let’s just both agree that the last thing that should be in the interest of the calgary flames is another ryan strome ot winner tonight😂
@FSN2NASTY And that includes not knowing what they had in Sam Bennett, or how to properly deploy or develop him. Florida sure as hell knew what he was.
@nitwitschool all i’m basically trying to say, is before you start building up a strong supporting cast, you better hope to hell you’ve figured out the stars first. not having enough star power or a properly constructed roster and focusing on the less important parts of the roster is backwards
@nitwitschool gaudreau was an infant in 2015 tho like if anything bennett was the star of that playoff run not him. and the team stunk in 2016. 23 and 13 would’ve been fine, even on shit roster. i don’t think it’s one or the other
@nitwitschool they lost game 5 vs the ducks with an incredibly flawed and lackluster roster on may 10th and by like mid june we already were shipping out big pieces for dougie hamilton. that season on so many levels was a disaster. would we finished bottom 5? idk. still better than wegot
@nitwitschool that was spun as a successful culture building year. fast forward and none of that lasted (lottery team the next yr), didn’t help get us anywhere close to a cup. i’d have to disagree w you here one of the biggest missed opportunities in recent flames history wasthecomeback kid yr
@nitwitschool when the flames should’ve been rebuilding properly and putting themselves in a place to draft mcdavid or eichel, they were scoring meaningless stajan ot winners vs vancouver. imagine one of those guys + the mony, gaudreau, tkachuk core. now we’re actually talking.
@nitwitschool outside one year with lindholm getting dragged around by chucky & johnny, we haven’t a good center in my lifetime. that’s the type of problem actually holding us back, not the lack of supporting cast. that should be the last thing to fix
@nitwitschool tre/ownership screwed us by not committing to the rebuild hard enough. we got mony & johnny and had good vibes in 2015 and thought we were a lot better than we actually were. we did not collect nearly enough good pieces to start trying to compete again when we did
@nitwitschool i like the irl person lol but stajan may be one of my least liked flames when he was w cgy haha him becoming the matt stajan of the group makes me want to keep him even less. the mid 2010’s flames would’ve been so better off with less stajans/vets on the roster ruined our rebuild
@FSN2NASTY I think he can just be the Matt Stajan of this team if they decide to keep him around. Once people move on from his original potential as a scorer, I do think he'd still be a good drink stirrer as the rest of the roster populates with youth.
meanwhile trading out vets got us guys like gridin and these ppl cried the most when we brought these picks in. it’d be funny if this wasn’t my favourite team and making these type of mistakes stall rebuilds
@nitwitschool frost is fine i like frost anyone thinking he’s an essential pillar of this team’s future or a top 6 center to lock in forever like i’ve seen on here the last couple days tho in my opinion needs to dream bigger and watch other better hockey teams play
@FSN2NASTY I agree with what you're saying completely. I feel Frost is catching some strays though. He's proven a good defensive centre. I'd have no issues with a few more years of him. But I'm certainly under no illusions he has star or 1st line potential.
