This account has often been accused of cherry-picking slave accounts. This is a standing offer of $100 for anyone who can prove that slave accounts are being skipped or content edited. Let the former slaves speak!

Fannie Jones, 85, of Augusta, GA was pampered by her master, and cried when they had to leave after the slaves were freedom. She also tells a bit about her husband's experience. #BlackHistory Any offensive language is Mrs. Jones' own.

Estella Jones of Augusta, GA gives a detailed recollection of slavery. In a rarity, she remembers the overseer as being more kind than the master. Their overseer would help conceal "illegal" slave barbecues. #BlackHistory

Susie Johnson, 77, of Griffin, GA says her old masters were good to their slaves, but did control them. They didn't use the whip much, or else their slaves wouldn't have wanted to stay with them when they were freed. #BlackHistory

Mr. Johnson followed his master to the war. His own lot was easy, though he saw lots of fighting, and had to take his wounded master back home. Some slaves stayed after emancipation, others got away as quickly as they could. #BlackHistory

Here we have the interesting story of how Uncle Jake retrieved his master's mule by spying on some not loyal to the Confederate cause. He showed a remarkable loyalty to his masters, in spite of adversity. #BlackHistory
