This Women’s History Month, we honor Rachel Carson, a Pennsylvania scientist and writer born in Springdale, a small town north of Pittsburgh, in 1907. Her book, "Silent Spring” helped readers understand how chemicals like DDT were harming birds. Thanks to her research, species like the peregrine falcon, bald eagle, and osprey have made a real comeback. Today, we have a family of peregrine falcons who nest on the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg, home of our central office. It’s a perfect reminder of how her ideas still help protect wildlife across our state. Falcon mating season is starting soon! Keep up with the latest falcon news on our site: dep.pa.gov/falconwire ... Spotted for the second time this month… and right on cue.   With mating season coming up soon, this falcon seems to be preparing early. Territory scouting? Reunion flight? We’re counting down! 🦅

Hey Falcon fans!

One of our peregrine falcons stopped by the nest. Does this mean mating season is approaching fast?

#DYK Some peregrine falcons stick it out in PA during the winters. Although sometimes cold and snowy, some falcons remain in Pennsylvania year-round while others leave their nesting territory during the winter months. Those that leave? They may travel hundreds of miles before settling on a winter territory. Learn more about PA peregrines: pa.gov/agencies/pgc/w…

Not even the snowfall could stop our falcon friend from paying the Rachel Carson Building a visit.

One of our birds decided to chill at the nest during the snow day. Hanging out like, "the cold doesn't bothered me anyway."    #FalconWatch

Big shoutout to one of DEP’s very own for keeping our falcon nest clean and safe!

He was strapped in tight, and made sure everything was just right for our favorite flyers. Thank you for helping our falcons feel at home!

Last month, 85/AK stopped by for a quick check-in. Now 09/BS is swooping in to see what’s happening around the nest!    Guess 09/BS just had to make sure everything still looks good at home. 🦅 #FalconWatch

Fall is here and winter is coming and just like the last two years, there’s a strong chance that 85/AK and 09/BS will stick close to their nest. These two seem to love the local life! 🦅 Stay tuned as we keep watch.

👀 Look who flew in to pay us a visit, it’s 85/AK! Not your usual fly-by! Falcons rarely stop by to rest in their nest this time of year. They're usually out expanding their hunting area once nesting is over. But this one clearly had other plans!  #FalconWatch

Did you know?

Young falcon 41/CA became the family bodyguard! He chased away vultures, egrets & cranes, stood guard by his sisters, and even cheered them on during their first flights. Talk about a protective big brother! 💪🏾💙 #FalconFacts
